McKinley offers easy access to travel, on foot and by car
In a city known for its aquatic achievements, strong school system and sought-after beach, the Mc Kinley neighborhood stands out because of its ordinariness. This small area, which sits on the northern tip of Long Beach along the Artesia Freeway and hugging the nearby city of Paramount, is aesthetically synonymous with so many other communities on the outskirts of big cities across the U.S. It has industrial companies and retail stores and a highly rated elementary school, plus residential neighborhoods where houses are a lot more affordable than they would be closer to the beach. There are sidewalks, so kids can easily pop in and out of neighbors’ houses, and amenities like hospitals and grocery stores and downtown Los Angeles are easily accessible because of its proximity to the highway.
Mostly single-story homes from the 1900s in McKinley
Houses here tend to be one-story, and they were typically built throughout the 20th century. You will see conventional homes from the 1950s for $700,000, 5,800-square-foot multifamily properties for $1.3 million, small stone houses under 1,000-square-feet for $570,000, stucco conventional houses for $650,000, front-gabled conventional homes from 1950 for $888,000 and 1,100-square-foot houses with partial brick exteriors for $650,000.
Retail and dining at the corner of East 68th Street and Cherry Avenue
Shopping for everything you need is easy when you live in Mc Kinley. The neighborhood includes a retail plaza at East 68th Street and Cherry Avenue with tenants like Target, Wingstop, Taco Bell, Food4Less and Restaurant Depot. Every week from Thursday through Monday, you can swing by the plaza for some churros from Churreria La Gracia, a beloved local churro stand that posts up in the parking lot throughout the week. Down the road you’ll see restaurants like Salvadorian eatery Pupusas, boba and sweets shop C&S Donuts and Soul Food Renaissance, where you can gorge yourself on southern-style meals.
Commuter access to Long Beach, though many work from home
Because of its location on the north side of Long Beach, Mc Kinley is a great spot for commuters. Along with the Artesia Freeway, it’s very close to I-710, Route 19 and I-605. Downtown Los Angeles is just 17 miles away, Irvine is 30 miles and Anaheim is about 16 miles east. While it’s close to those larger areas, there’s also a big portion of the Long Beach population that works remotely, says Beatrix Whipple, Realtor with the Whipple Group serving Long Beach and Los Angeles. “There’s a lot of creative clout in Long Beach. A lot of people work from home,” she says. “It’s a good option for a lot of people, if one spouse works in LA and other in Orange County, it’s halfway in between.”
A-rated Long Beach schools serve the area
For the kids who aren’t quite ready to join the workforce, Long Beach has great public schools. The school system, the Long Beach Unified School District, is rated an A on Niche. Kids who live in Mc Kinley are assigned to Mc Kinley Elementary School, which has a B-plus from Niche and serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Then it’s off to Hamilton Middle School and Jordan High School, which is the alma mater of “Gilligan’s Island” lead actor Bob Denver.
