Zaferia is a vibrant east Long Beach neighborhood, best known for its array of restaurants next to trendy boutiques and nightlife. “It’s very nice, very attractive and close to the beach. You’ll also find some design firms and hipster coffee shops here,” says Buckingham Investments CEO and managing broker Anthony Walker who has worked in the area for over a decade. Trendy stores, diverse cuisines and bars on Anaheim Street
Just a walk away from many homes, East Anaheim Street is the retail, restaurant and nightlife centerpiece of Zaferia. Locals can expect coffee shops, bars and cuisines from all over the world. Ideal for a night out, Alex’s Bar is a long-running rock club that hosts live music nearly every night. Joe Jost’s, a local dive that’s been a fixture of the neighborhood since 1924, touts itself as one of the oldest pubs in Long Beach. Restaurants include A&J Seafood Shack, a Cambodian fusion walk-up window. Selva is an authentic Colombian eatery with a cocktail bar and happy hour specials. There’s espresso at Good Time, a local cafe with a hip ambiance thanks to shelves of plants and a gallery wall. The neighborhood’s also home to several design studios and boutique shops, including Urban Americana, an antique furniture store with everything from midcentury modern pieces to vintage farmhouse décor. For groceries, residents can stop by the Food 4 Less in the Belmont Center strip mall.

Craftsman bungalows, condos and more in Zaferia
Northeast of downtown Long Beach, Zaferia’s shopping area and community park are centrally located within the neighborhood. The rest of the area is residential, with Monterey pines and palm trees lining walkable streets. The homes often have yards landscaped with agave plants, fruit trees and custom fences. As for architecture, there are Craftsman bungalows and Mediterranean homes, increasingly renovated in recent years, giving them a modern appeal. There are also apartment and condo buildings scattered throughout the area. Homes range from around $600,000 to $700,000, while condos range from $400,000 to $550,000. Those interested should keep a close eye on the market: “It’s popular. My listings have not lasted more than 30 days, and the last one was off the market in 10 days. There’s not enough supply for the demand,” Pastorini says.

Orizaba Park and other recreation
At the heart of the neighborhood, Orizaba Park is Zaferia’s outdoor recreation hub, with nearly 4 acres of green space. It has a skate park, playgrounds and tree-lined walking paths. The park is also home to the Orizaba Park Community Center, which opened in 2014 and offers after-school programs. City Beach is about 2 mile south of the neighborhood and is always a good spot for a swim or a walk at sunset.

Happy Sundays and more community events
Happy Sundays, a free music festival featuring a lineup of local artists, is one of the neighborhood’s biggest events. It also has activities from live tattooing to comedy sets. “In Long Beach, the big events are the movies in the park and concerts in the park,” Pastorini says. A rotation of family-friendly films like “Monsters, Inc.” are played at Orizaba Park every summer. Attendees often bring lawn chairs and wear apparel for the weekly dress-up theme. There are concerts in the summer featuring local musicians, like the Long Beach Community Band.

Well-rated Long Beach public schools
Nieto Herrera Elementary School has a B rating on Niche. Jefferson Leadership Academies, a middle school, also has a B. With an A rating, Woodrow Wilson High School was named one of the most challenging schools in the country by the Washington Post based on its rigorous college prep course. The school offers 27 Advanced Placement courses as well as specific academic “Pathways.” These include School of the Arts, Vision of Excellence, School of Medicine & Biotechnology, School of Leadership & Public Service and School of Technology.

A 3-mile drive to downtown Long Beach

For medical services, residents can go to Dignity Health - St. Mary Medical Center, around 2 miles away. The closest major airport is Long Beach Airport, only about 3 miles north of the neighborhood.
