Residents unite for revitalization

South Los Angeles neighborhood Chesterfield Square is less than a mile in size, but this hidden, often-overlooked gem has a unique history. The neighborhood has been home to famed musician Dexter Gordon, pioneering filmmaker and animator Ray Harryhausen, the filming location of several popular movies, including 1990s classic “Boyz N The Hood” and while it’s faced its share of challenges, this tight-knit community is seeing a resurgence thanks to revitalization efforts, resident-led initiatives and small business growth. “We have families that have been here for 30 or 40 years, and they’re very neighborly, so you get that sense of community right away,” says Dan Howard, Realtor for Compass and Chesterfield Square resident for seven years. “You’re also central to everything; you’re in the heart of LA, so that’s another reason people like living here.”

Spanish-style abodes abound

Chesterfield Square offers charming California bungalows with Spanish influences, duplexes and some larger, modern homes sprinkled in. “The architecture is another part of the appeal,” Howard says. “I would say 30 percent of Spanish homes in South LA are in Chesterfield Square. Values have also gone up 50 percent over the last five or six years. More development is happening, and it’s poised to continue upward.” Most homes were built in the 1920s, ranging from $400,000 to $840,000. The neighborhood offers two- to four-bedroom layouts. Towering palms blanket front and back yards, which are well-kept and filled with flowers, plants and colorful shrubs. While residents will be close to their neighbors, sidewalks and streets are wide, making it pedestrian-friendly. “On certain streets, you have an unobstructed gorgeous view of the Hollywood sign and the Downtown LA skyline, which is a nice benefit,” Howard says.

A neighborhood built on mom and pops

Chesterfield Square is known for its mom and pops. Authentic Latin American cuisine and soul food dominate the culinary landscape. Lupita’s Bakery serves up cakes and cupcakes with an in-house taqueria offering everything from tortas to chile rellenos. Enjoy Salvadoran lunch and dinner specialties at Sonsonate Grill and Salvadoran sweets at El Arca Bakery. M’Dears is the go-to spot for fried chicken, pork chops and meatloaf. At the no-frills Jackson Brothers Bar, grab a cold pint while enjoying live music. Good Fred Barbershop is an institution in Chesterfield Square. Opened in 1968 by Frederic Douglas “Good Fred” Ellis as LaRutan, the shop attracted a variety of famous patrons, from late comedian Richard Pryor to musicians Nina Simone and Bobby Womack. The shop is still beloved today and can’t be missed with its “Freedom Won’t Wait” mural splashed across the front and a dedication to Ellis on the side. Antique Stove Heaven is another unique shop that opened in 1978. Selling vintage ovens and offering repairs, the shop’s stoves have been featured in “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Devil in A Blue Dress.” Chesterfield Square shopping center provides Food4Less for groceries, The Home Depot, and other retailers. Nearby Slauson Super Mall’s large indoor shopping center is a local favorite for swap meets. For entertainment, head to Sofi Stadium in the adjacent neighborhood, Inglewood, home to the National Football League teams Los Angeles Rams and Chargers.

Community at the heart of Chesterfield Square

A community whose residents are striving to revitalize it and keep it tight knit, the neighborhood takes pride in its traditions like monthly block meetings, an annual Bike & Art in the Park event and the Kingdom Day Parade, its biggest cultural event, which passes through the neighborhood every year along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in honor of the late iconic civil rights activist. The parade rolls by a mural of MLK Jr., one of many pieces of artwork that have become part of Chesterfield Square’s culture. Handler Pharmacy displays flying sparrows and a stunning portrait of the late “Black Panther” star, Chadwick Boseman. On the other side of the street is a “Welcome to South Central” mural featuring portraits of children.
