University Park

Duplexes and fourplexes with unique architecture
Because of the large college student population, many single-family homes here have been transformed into multifamily housing. “Student housing companies in the area buy properties, fix them up and rent them to college students. A lot of the homes have been split into units, turned into duplexes and fourplexes; accessory dwelling units are also being added to existing properties to accommodate the student population,” Rodriguez says. Many of the historic homes here were custom-built and reflect an array of architecture; residents can find a mix of Craftsman-style properties, Queen Annes and eclectic homes with ornate finishings. There are also a handful of Traditional-style residences that dot the area and feature steep, front-facing gables. Since many students living in University Park are renters, numerous low-rise apartment complexes can be seen throughout the neighborhood.Stroll along the campus green
“There are lots of neighborhood parks throughout the area; residents also often go to the college campuses to walk their dogs or go for a stroll,” Rodriguez says. At the USC campus, paved walking paths stretch across campus green spaces such as McCarthy Quad and Alumni Park. On hot summer days, residents can find shaded green areas situated on a large central lawn at the Doheny Campus at MSMU’s Los Angeles branch. This neighborhood is also home to the Hoover Recreation Center, where residents can register for fitness classes, and families can enroll their kids in after-school programs.Spend the day exploring Exposition Park
There’s no shortage of events and entertainment in this neighborhood – just across the street from USC is Exposition Park, where locals can spend the day at one of the park’s several state-of-the-art museums, including the California Science Center, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the California African American Museum. Numerous community activities and events also take place at USC: “There’s a farmers market on the campus every Wednesday,” Rodriguez says. He also adds that University Park residents are within proximity of USC’s sporting venues and stadiums at Exposition Park, so many locals attend the University’s athletic events.Enjoy Italian tapas at Bacari
“USC Village is a popular shopping area with lunch spots and a Trader Joe’s,” Rodriguez says. The Village, which is located along Hoover Street, is also home to a Target department store and the USC Village Fitness Center. Further up Hoover Street, locals can dine at Bacari on West Adams, which Rodriguez says is one of his favorite dining spots. “It’s a great little tapas spot with bar-style food; it’s a really fun place to go and has become a popular hangout spot.” Right next door is Nature’s Brew Coffee & Kitchen, a counter-serve café with all-day breakfast and fresh pastries baked twice daily.K-12 students served by the Los Angeles Unified School District
K-12 students in University Park are served by the Los Angeles Unified School District, which receives an overall B-plus rating from Niche. Norwood Street Elementary and Vermont Avenue Elementary are two C-plus-rated primary schools that young learners can attend. The B-plus-rated 32nd Street School/USC Magnet offers both an elementary school and a secondary school, the latter of which is a media arts and engineering magnet. Alliance Gertz-Ressler High School receives an A-minus rating and is a public charter school that serves students in grades six through 12.Nearby light rail stations operated by LA Metro
Numerous fixed bus routes with stops on main roads are operated by both the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and LA Metro. There are also two Metro light rail stations – Jefferson/USC and LATTC/Ortho Institute – just outside the neighborhood. The 110 and the 10 border the neighborhood to the east and north, respectively, and are used by commuters to travel throughout the LA area. To catch a flight, locals can drive 16 miles southwest to the Los Angeles International Airport.
