New construction and developments in South Los Angeles neighborhood
Vermont Square, an urban South Los Angeles neighborhood, was formed in the early 20th century and, at the time, was touted as the largest LA subdivision ever. Today, street banners put up by the Voices Neighborhood Council call it "The Heart of South Los Angeles." This primarily residential neighborhood is also home to the Vermont Square Branch Library; built in 1913, it is known to be the Los Angeles Public Library system’s oldest branch library and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although many parts of the neighborhood conserve the past, Vermont Square also looks toward the future: “This area has started to see a lot of transformation. There’s been a lot of construction and development going on, newer homes, and full remodels,” says Realtor Brian Ngoy with Milano Realty and Ngoy Realty Group, who has more than a decade of industry experience.

Craftsman homes between $600,000 and $1 million
Single-family homes here are found along grid-style numbered streets decorated with towering palm and cypress trees, as well as a variety of other desert plant life. Roads here are also often lined by well-maintained sidewalks, making this a very walkable neighborhood. Although some properties have driveways, residents often utilize street parking for their vehicles. Many homes here were built in the early 20th century: “The historic homes give this neighborhood a lot of character,” Ngoy says. Common home styles include Craftsman residences and bungalows, as well as a number of Spanish-style properties featuring stucco finishes and clay roof tiles. Most lots include front yards, some enclosed by decorative fencing or walls. Duplexes and other multiunit properties are also common throughout the neighborhood. A majority of homes tend to range in price from about $600,000 to $1 million, with a median price of approximately $725,000.
