Highwood East is a residential neighborhood tucked into the appealing landscape on the south side of Maplewood, just east of the St. Paul city limits. Highwood East features quiet, tree-lined suburban streets, neighborhood parks and protected preserves that connect to the nearby Mississippi River. With a major interstate just minutes away and a bypass bordering the neighborhood, residents also enjoy convenient commutes to and from the Twin Cities.

Homes are a mix of ranch-style and contemporary designs

Midcentury ranch-style homes are common among the neighborhood’s older housing, but contemporary custom homes in a variety of sizes and styles make up the bulk of the housing options. Most homes, which offer driveways and attached garages, are found on truncated streets in subdivision settings. Streets are walkable, and cul-de-sacs offer additional privacy. Spacious front yards are common, and back yards tend to be wooded, with residential areas having been carved out of the natural landscape. Wooded areas and natural spaces provide a sound buffer between the Interstate 494 bypass and the closest homes. Prices range from around $300,000 to about $700,000.

Access to neighborhood parks and a nature preserve

Pleasantview Park and Applewood Park are neighborhood recreational spaces that offer a variety of amenities. Pleasantview is the larger of the two. It features athletic courts, an athletic field and a winter skating area. Applewood is home to a trail loop, a playground and a picnic area. Fish Creek Natural Area is a nature preserve on the neighborhood’s south side. The Fish Creek Greenway runs from nearby Carver Lake, which features a beach, to the Mississippi River in St. Paul. Between the neighborhood and the river is Pig’s Eye Lake, the featured attraction at Pig’s Eye Park. Once a landfill, it was transformed into a regional destination that also offers hiking trails and bird-watching spots. In addition, Maplewood is part of the Gateway State Trail, a multi-use rail trail that starts in St. Paul and runs through several suburbs.

Convenient retail center nearby; Mall of America 20 minutes away

Shopping and dining options are conveniently concentrated around the I-494 corridor. Target anchors the Valley Creek Plaza, which also includes Lunds & Byerlys Woodbury, a regional grocery store. Southern Social Woodbury is a highly rated restaurant nearby. More shopping and dining options can be found in Maplewood along the Interstate 94 corridor. Residents can also take advantage of the shopping and dining available in downtown St. Paul and the Mall of America in Bloomington. The largest mall in the United States is about 20 minutes away.

Nearby elementary school rated A-minus

Nearby Carver Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, is the highest rated of three schools that serve the neighborhood. The schools are part of the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District, rated B-minus by Niche. Older students can attend Skyview Middle School, rated C-plus, and Tartan High School, rated B. The high school offers extracurricular activities in subjects as varied as business, robotics and the performing arts. Minnesota allows students to apply for transfers to schools outside of their assigned districts as part of an open enrollment program. Private options in the city of Maplewood include Hill-Murray School, a co-ed Catholic institution that serves students in sixth through 12th grades, and Mounds Park Academy, a private, PK-12 college preparatory school.

Interstate access to St. Paul and Minneapolis

The jobs and amenities of the Twin Cities region are easily accessible. Downtown St. Paul is about 8 miles away via Interstate 94, which is about 3 miles from the neighborhood. Downtown Minneapolis is about 10 miles farther along I-94. I-494, which forms part of the neighborhood’s border, connects residents to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America, both about 16 miles away. Closer to home, M Health Fairview Woodwinds Hospital is about 2 miles away. While summers are hot and humid, winters can be severe. New residents should be aware that freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall can impact travel times.
