A suburban community about 25 miles outside the nation's capital
Just east of Dulles International Airport and near two Metro stations, McNair is popular for its access to D.C. and Northern Virginia. Since the community abuts the major airport, aviation noise, hotels and business parks are also part of its identity. Many of its approximately 22,000 residents work in D.C., Dulles or area office parks. Major employers include Dulles Airport, government agencies, Airbus and Northrop Grumman. The median household income is $123,327, higher than the state’s median of about $91,000. "It's still the suburbs, but you're right in the middle of everything. Reston is right there, You're 30 minutes by car or on the Metro to D.C. And you can go the opposite direction to Ashburn, Middleburg or Leesburg to a quiet winery or vineyard," says Pooja Chawla, a former Realtor at Samson Properties. However, traffic getting into the city during rush hours may cause significant delay.

Condos and townhouses in newer subdivisions
The majority of homes in the area are townhouses and condos built in the last 20 years, and many are in subdivisions with HOAs. McNair Farms is a planned community with over 250 townhouses, and units typically sell between $400,000 and $900,000. Condos in smaller subdivisions are usually priced from $250,000 to $650,000. Amenities often include community pools and clubhouses. "It's more affordable than places like Reston, Tyson or Arlington. You get a lot more square footage for your price compared to Arlington," Chawla says.

Top-rated public and private schools for McNair
McNair is zoned for Fairfax County Public Schools, which has an A Niche grade and is rated the No. 6 best school district in Virginia. The school system serves close to 180,000 students with a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Students here may attend McNair Elementary School, McNair Upper Elementary School, Rachel Carson Middle School and Westfield High School. The private Oak Hill Christian School serves kindergarten through 12th-grade students and has an A-plus Niche grade. Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University and Strayer University’s Jack Welch Management Institute, which offers one MBA program, are within approximately 15 miles of the community.

A major shopping center right in McNair
Village Center at Dulles is a shopping plaza with big-box and grocery stores, service shops, businesses, banks and a diverse mix of restaurants. Directly across Dulles Access Road is Elden Street in Herndon, which is lined with the shopping mall Worldgate Centre, an H Mart and more retailers and eateries. The area also has a lively international food scene, offering Asian, American, Mediterranean, Italian and Latin American fare.

Easy access to the Metro and highways
Two Metro stations are nearby: Innovation Center Metro Station and Herndon Metro Station. Both are on the Silver Line, and many residents are within walking distance. "The best part about the Silver Line is that it also goes to Dulles Airport, Tysons Corner, D.C. and Arlington," Chawla says. Drivers can also take Route 267 into D.C. Some commuters, however, stay in McNair for work at office parks such as Dulles Corner. "The area has a lot of government and private offices that require security clearance," Chawla says. Reston Hospital Center is also about 4 miles east of McNair.
Commuters living in McNair can use the Herndon Metro Station for traveling into DC.
Buses are available throughout McNair to transport residents.

Pocket parks and sports fields in McNair
The area experiences humid summers and relatively cold winters with occasional snow. Arrowbrook Centre is a mixed-use area with turf soccer fields, tennis courts and walking trails around Arrowbrook Pond. Dulles Station Community Park has a playground and dog park and connects to paved walking trails around the community. The neighborhood also has several more pocket parks and playgrounds scattered throughout. Just north of McNair, golfers can book tee times Herndon Centennial Golf Course. The Washington and Old Dominion Trail is a 45-mile regional trail system for bikers and hikers.

Community events in Frederick County
The community gathers on Saturdays in the summer for free concerts at Arrowbrook Centre Park. Just south of McNair, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly has aviation exhibits and two massive hangars with dozens of airplanes on display, educating visitors on the history of flying. The museum also hosts special events and story times for kids, featuring talks from scientists, pilots and astronauts.
The Udvar-Hazy Center air and space museum is an excellent educational opportunity close to McNair.
