Burgeoning suburb in northeast Memphis
With active community centers, industrial development and new construction, Raleigh is a growing suburb. “This area has really experienced a lot of revitalization,” says Jeremy Veldman, an Affiliate Broker with Kaizen Realty who has been selling homes in the area for over 10 years. “A lot of anchors have popped up in the last few years. The Amazon warehouse and the Nike plant are bringing in jobs, which is strengthening the community.” Located in northeast Memphis, the community offers proximity to local employers and major thoroughfares such as I-40, which connects residents to Downtown Memphis and beyond.
A mix of traditional homes and new construction
Residential streets are shaded by towering oak trees, behind which a collection of ranch-style, split-level and colonial revival homes sit. The neighborhood predominantly features single-family homes, with an average sales price of about $150,000. “These are established homes that are about 40 to 50 years old,” Veldman says. “Most of them have fenced-in backyards and two-car carports or attached garages.” Homebuyers can find three-bedroom ranch-style homes with brick exteriors and attached carports for about $125,000 to $210,000. In northeast Raleigh, small lakes such as Otter and Beaver Lake offer waterfront views and wooded lots with up to half an acre of land. New construction is also scattered throughout the neighborhood, with new traditional homes built in the early 2020s featuring open floorplans and quarter-acre lots, with prices starting at around $260,000.
Thoroughfares and public bus route connect to downtown
Raleigh is about 13 miles northeast of Downtown Memphis and sits just above Interstate 40, which connects Tennessee’s three largest cities – Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. The neighborhood is also served by Route 11 of the Memphis Area Transit Authority Bus, which makes several stops along Austin Peay Highway before heading to local distribution centers and downtown. For longer trips, the Memphis International Airport is about 20 miles south.
Big-box retailers and restaurants along Austin Peay Highway
The neighborhood’s commercial hub is centered around Austin Peay Highway. The thoroughfare is lined by regional fast-food chains such as Dixie Queen and Krystal. Local favorites include Donut Man, a bakery serving breakfast sandwiches, coffee and, of course, fresh donuts. For sit-down meals, Southern Hands is a homestyle restaurant known for its homemade cornbread and soul food, while Tokyo Grill serves Japanese hibachi, sushi and more. When it's time to run errands, locals can stop by big-box stores such as Aldi and Save A Lot.
Public parks and community spaces in Raleigh
There are several green spaces scattered throughout Raleigh, including Harry C Pierotti Park, which has a tennis center with eight outdoor courts, a basketball court and a playground for kids to explore. The park is also home to the Raleigh Community Center, which features an outdoor pool, computer lab and a range of programs for all ages. Along Austin Peay Highway, the Raleigh Springs Civic Center includes a pond with a paved walking trail, a concrete skate park and the Raleigh Library. Residents can also venture further south towards the Wolf River and bike along the Wolf River Greenway, or go fishing at Epping Lake, which has a steady supply of bass.
Public and charter schools in Shelby County
Children in the area attend the Shelby County School District, which has an average student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. Younger kids in grades K-5 may begin their education at Egypt Elementary School, which earned a C from Niche, before moving on to Raleigh-Egypt Middle School, which earned a grade of C-minus. Teens attend Raleigh-Egypt High School, which also earned a C-minus and offers both Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses. The county follows a General Choice Transfer process, meaning that students can apply to attend other public schools outside of their assigned pathway. The neighborhood contains several options, including public charter schools such as Star Academy, which serves grades K-7.
Festivities with the Raleigh Community Center
In addition to cooking classes, fitness programs and educational courses, the Raleigh Community Center sponsors several annual events. Popular festivities include the Block Party for Peace, a three-day festival featuring family-friendly activities, food, health screenings, a career fair and more.
Industrial development and proximity to major employers
While residents in Raleigh enjoy suburban living, the neighborhood is bordered to the west by several industrial developments along New Allen Road. Some of the area’s biggest employers include distribution centers for Nike and Amazon. Residents are also about 3 miles south of Methodist North Hospital, which includes a 24-hour emergency room.
