Park Knoll
Suburban Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53225
Filling open space on the outskirts of Milwaukee
Construction in Park Knoll began in the 1970s, as room for new housing closer to downtown Milwaukee was no longer available. Ranch-style homes and bi-levels from that era are the most prevalent in the neighborhood, ranging between $200,000 and $315,000. Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals are in the same price range. "The lawns in Park Knoll are three times as large as ones you'd find closer to downtown," Mullikin says. "It's still an urban setting but leans more suburban. True suburbia starts just beyond the neighborhood to the west, though." Many homes have fence-bordered yards with above-ground pools, sheds, garden beds and small patios. A few new traditional houses and modern Craftsman homes from the 1990s and early 2000s now occupy the space that was left empty nearest the industrial southern end of the neighborhood. They feature a mix of vinyl and brick siding, have multi-pitched roofs and range between $290,000 and $375,000.Bordered by the Menomonee River and its natural beauty
There are no parks in the area, but a few are nearby and about 10 minutes away or less by car. Frontier Park is 2 miles south and has baseball diamonds, tennis courts and basketball courts. Like in the Park Knoll neighborhood, lush, dense woods and grassy stretches surrounding the Menomonee River act as a natural border of the park. The river divides the park, and residents can get from one side of the water to the other by a short pedestrian bridge. "The Menomonee River environmental corridor goes along the neighborhood's western side," Mullikin explains. "So, you'll see a lot of wildlife and nature there that you wouldn't otherwise see in other urban settings." Noyes Park is just over 4 miles away but worth the drive for its public indoor pool, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Cream City Skatepark, Butler Skateland and Milwaukee Spring Volleyball Center are all in the industrial complexes south of the neighborhood. The activity-filled spots, converted from warehouses, offer a good space for expelling energy on rainy or snowy days.Agricultural sciences taught within walking distance from home
Milwaukee Public Schools offers school of choice, where families can choose from any school in the district to send their children. Many end up choosing neighborhood schools for the convenience of being able to walk since district-provided transportation is not guaranteed. River Trail School is in the middle of Park Knoll and serves kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is rated C-minus by Niche and has an interesting curriculum centered around agricultural sciences. Students can attend Maple Tree Elementary School for a more traditional learning style, followed by Morse Middle School and James Madison Academic Campus for high school. All three are rated a C-minus by Niche.Car aficionados can win trophies
Hot Rods on Hampton happens annually on the same street as the Butler Inn. The Village of Butler organizes the event, but locals from the surrounding communities are encouraged to show up, bring their classic cars and participate. "We close a decent chunk of our streets along Hampton Avenue to stage classic cars," Benjamin Hubrich, the village administrator for the Village of Butler. The top owners of different car categories earn awards, and raffles occur throughout the event. "The bars extend their premises and set up little bars to get drinks and food," Hubrich says. "People just walk around and have a really nice time talking about cars."Interstate 41 adds accessibility and some nuisance
Interstate 41 borders the neighborhood to the east, and while nearby on- and off-ramps add convenience, the highway adds a significant amount of noise to the area. No buses stop in the neighborhoods, but a few routes are in the shopping plaza along Silver Spring Drive. Residents depend on personal cars to get around, which they can park in attached garages or under carports alongside their homes. Those who work in downtown Milwaukee have a 15-mile or 25-minute commute, traffic depending. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is an additional 5 miles south of Downtown. Because of a lack of through streets, non-residents rarely drive through Park Knoll.
National chains and big box stores
There are no restaurants in Park Knoll, and nearby shops and dining options are limited. The area and streets around the neighborhood are heavily industrial, with manufacturers, distributors and suppliers. However, fast-food restaurants and national chains are southeast of the area around West Silver Spring Drive and North Lovers Lane Road. The small village of Butler is close and is home to Butler Inn. A classic tavern with pizza, wings, and beer, the restaurant is in the space once occupied by a hotel for employees of the nearby railroad in the early 1900s. Inspired by its historical roots, the dining room has wooden booths, wood-paneled walls and stained-glass chandeliers. Walmart, Dollar Tree and small clothing stores are a mile east on Silver Spring Drive. Driving 4 miles south on Interstate 41 brings residents to a large shopping destination with Meijer, Ulta, Target and Home Depot.
