A blend of architectural styles
Most homes in this area were built between the 1900s to 1920s. According to Paulson, the homes here are what he describes as “Craftsman bungalows” which are some of the most common architectural styles in the neighborhood. “Most of these are one-and-a-half-story homes with porches. They’re kind of a distinct style: usually with two bedrooms and bath on the main floor, along with a living, dining, kitchen and the third bedroom upstairs.” Paulson adds that certain parts of the neighborhood are paved with sidewalks, which residents use to walk or bike. Homes start at $200,000 and go up to $450,000. While most houses are single-family, many have been converted into multi-family units to support the 30% of residents who are renters.Access to Phelps Field Park and the Chain Lakes
Phelps Field Park, located just outside the neighborhood, is open for use every day from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. This newly renovated green space offers amenities such as a basketball court, multiple sports fields, a playground and more. Locals may also visit Powderhorn Park, less than a 2-mile drive away. “It’s really nice, lots of people walking their dogs around and going out to the lake. There’s also events being held there all the time,” says Wagner. A couple of blocks away are Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis, part of Minneapolis’s “chain lakes." These have a variety of watersport activities, such as kayaking, canoeing and sailing. They also offer recreation outside of the water, like paved trails for hiking and picnic areas.Enrolling at Washburn Senior High School
The schools here fall under the Minneapolis Public School District. Children can begin their education at Barton Elementary School, which earns a C rating from Niche. Students can then attend Justice Page Middle School, which receives a B rating. For Grades 9-12, students may attend Washburn Senior High School, rated A-minus overall. Washburn High School offers AVID, a nationally recognized college readiness program, to its students. An active and involved Neighborhood Organization
The Bryant Neighborhood Organization, partnered with the Powderhorn Park Organization, plays an active role in community listening and engagement. Many of the organization’s initiatives focus on providing access to fresh & healthy food, long-term housing, and addressing racial and economic inequalities for its residents. One of its most recent events is its partnership with Plant-Grow-Share, a grassroots collective dedicated to empowering residents to grow healthy produce and create more green spaces in Minneapolis. Christ The King Lutheran Church also offers a community garden, which residents can rent out for $20 a plot.Getting around Bryant
Interstate 35 runs on the West side of Bryant, which residents can use to commute into downtown Minneapolis, about a 4-mile drive away. Although Bryant is primarily residential, dining and shopping options are easily found in the surrounding areas. For some classic American food, residents head to The Lowbrow, a burger restaurant. The Lowbrow makes all their food from locally sourced ingredients and offers gluten-free options. Groceries are picked up at the Seward Community Co-op, a community-owned grocery store featuring local businesses.Crime
