Diamond Lake has convenient access to parks, lakes and the airport

Diamond Lake’s location helps it shine. The suburban neighborhood is in the larger Nokomis community of southern Minneapolis, right next to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The area has a mix of homes from the early to mid-1900s, and residents get access to the namesake Diamond Lake and several other green spaces within a few miles. Students are served by a highly rated school district, and downtown businesses and cultural centers are around 6 miles away.

What people often pay for the area's early to mid-1900s homes

Diamond Lake’s housing stock is a mix of Craftsman-style bungalows, Cap Cods, ranch-style houses and Tudor-style homes. Most were built between 1925 and 1960. Prices often run from the upper $200,000s to the mid-$600,000s. Custom homes near the neighborhood’s namesake Diamond Lake can sell for more, but rarely hit the market. There are a handful of duplexes that typically range from the upper $400,000s to the mid-$500,000s. The neighborhood tends to be a little less expensive than surrounding communities like Page and Hale.

The community has noise protections and is popular with cyclists

The suburban neighborhood has gridded streets lined with trees, whose leaves change from green to red and orange before falling off each autumn. Residents often walk their pets along the area’s well-kept sidewalks. Biking is popular in the area. Some roads, like 12th Avenue South, are designated bike boulevards, while others, like Chicago Avenue, have painted bike lanes. The neighborhood’s location near the airport makes it noisier than communities to the north. Andrea Vorachek, a Realtor with Reside, says many of the area’s homes have undergone renovations to limit the noise. “There have been investments in homes to give them either central air, so people can keep the windows closed, or upgraded insulation,” Vorachek says.

Students are zoned for the Minneapolis Public School District

The area falls under the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District, but the state’s open-enrollment policy allows students to attend any school outside of the district that has space available. The private Our Lady of Peace Catholic School, which gets top marks and is just outside the neighborhood, is another option. There are also citywide magnet schools that use lotteries to determine enrollment.

There are nearby parks for sports and for relaxing

Residents are a few miles from Minnehaha Regional Park, which offers hiking and biking paths, a disc golf course, volleyball courts, gardens and picnic areas. It’s also home to Minnehaha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall that is often used as a photo backdrop. Lake Nokomis Park, close to a mile and a half from the neighborhood, provides sports fields, an ice rink, a fishing pier and a beach. Canoes and kayaks are allowed on the water. “That’s where the majority of people go, because it’s one of the only big lakes east of [Interstate] 35W,” Vorachek says. Just south of the area is Veterans Park, which offers a pool and a mini-golf course, among other amenities.

Within the community, Solomon Park has an archery range and plenty of open space, and Todd Park has baseball and softball diamonds, tennis courts and a playground. Diamond Lake Park is surrounded by wetlands and is known for its birdwatching, though it also has a fishing pier.
