Kenny, a well-connected South Minneapolis community
Kenny is a well-connected neighborhood in South Minneapolis with a close-knit community and an active neighborhood association. Students can easily walk to class, with both an elementary school and a middle school in the area. After school, families can bring their kids to Kenny Park or head to the nearby Lake Harriet. There are several restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance, and major roads and Highway 62 allow residents to quickly get around the Twin Cities.
Variety of housing styles includes Tudor Revivals
You’ll find a lot of variety in Kenny’s housing market, with styles that range from early-1900s Tudor Revivals to more recent contemporary and New Traditional homes. There are also plenty of mid-20th-century ranch-style houses, Garrison Colonials and cottages. While the newer properties have attached garages, most homes have driveways and detached garages that are accessible via back alleys. Prices generally range from the mid-$300,000s to the low $700,000s, but homes larger than 2,500 square feet can cost between the low $800,000s and $1.2 million. The median home price is slightly higher than in nearby communities like Windom.
Students can walk to highly rated Minneapolis public schools
Kenny is part of the Minneapolis Public School District, which receives a B from Niche. Students in the neighborhood can walk to the A-minus-rated Kenny Community School and Anthony Middle School, the latter of which offers the International Baccalaureate program. Private options include the nearby Annunciation Catholic School, which earns an A-plus and serves prekindergarten through eighth grade.
Outdoor fun at Kenny Park and Lake Harriet
The heart of the neighborhood’s recreation is Kenny Park, located between the two schools. Amenities include:
A playground with swings and slides
Athletic fields for baseball and soccer
An ice-skating rink that’s open in the winter
A wading pool where kids cool off in the summer
A recreation center with childcare programs
Lake Harriet Regional Park is nearby, with multiuse trails, boat launches and a popular bandstand that hosts a summer concert series. If you’re looking for a more peaceful trail, you can head to Grass Lake, in the southern part of Kenny.
Kenny Neighborhood Association hosts events
Part of the reason people like living in Kenny is its sense of community. “It’s a great, safe neighborhood that’s the type of place where neighbors come together and help each other out,” says Bill Bomberg, Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. The Kenny Neighborhood Association plays a big role in bringing people together, planning events like Kenny PorchFest, where locals enjoy live music on their neighbors’ front yards, and the Fire & Ice Skating Party at Kenny Park every January, which has ice-skating, hot cocoa and a bonfire.
Location is a big draw, with downtown Minneapolis 15 minutes away
Bomberg says, “Kenny is a happening family neighborhood that both young people and older people love,” citing its location as a main draw. It’s less than a 10-mile (15-minute) drive from downtown Minneapolis and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, and only about 15 miles (25 minutes) from downtown Saint Paul. Because the airport is so close, residents can often hear planes overhead. Drivers can easily access Highway 62 and Interstate 35 West, and public transportation is available through Metro Transit buses.
Nearby restaurants include Book Club and Colita
Living in Kenny means you’re never too far from popular restaurants. This is just a taste of what’s available:
Book Club, a West Coast-inspired restaurant with a patio and a wide selection of cocktails
Olivera’s Authentic Mexican Food, a food truck that sets up along Lyndale Avenue
Red Wagon Pizza Company, a pizzeria that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
Colita, a high-end restaurant that blends Mexican, barbecue and Argentinean flavors
Prima, a family-owned Italian eatery with locally sourced and homegrown ingredients
There are more options at 50th & France in Edina, a shopping center that also has boutiques, a movie theater and a Lunds & Byerlys. Kowalski’s Market along Lyndale Avenue is a closer grocery option.
