The Nokomis East Neighborhood Association hosts community events
Keewaydin is one of four neighborhoods in the Nokomis East community of south Minneapolis, alongside Wenonah, Morris Park and Minnehaha. Residents tend to support one another, as does the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association, which hosts events like food truck rallies and area clean-ups. It also oversees community gardens.
The neighborhood’s grid-like streets are lined with trees, whose leaves give the area pops of red and orange each fall. Sidewalks are usually well-kept, allowing people to easily get to a friend’s house or to the lake. Front yards are mostly grass with a few bushes or small trees. Overhead planes can cause noise, but many homes have upgraded windows and insulation to block out sound. “In my experience, it’s not usually a major complaint from residents, and a lot of people adjust to it the same way they do with train noise in other neighborhoods,” says CJ Norman, a real estate agent with Norman Homes at Pemberton Real Estate.

Lake Nokomis Park is the area's biggest attraction
Keewaydin is “one of those areas where neighbors are often outside, which adds to the community feel,” Norman says. Its biggest attraction is Lake Nokomis Park, where people often go to relax on the beach or paddle across the water in a kayak. Biking and jogging paths wrap around the lake, helping people get to the park’s sports fields, ice rink, boat launch, fishing pier and playgrounds. Just north, Lake Hiawatha Park is smaller but has similar amenities. It’s also home to Hiawatha Golf Club, which has a public 18-hole course. The two lakes are connected by trails. Away from the water, Keewaydin Park has baseball and softball diamonds, a soccer field, a wading pool and a playground.
The community is about a mile and a half from Minnehaha Regional Park, one of the city’s most popular green spaces. People often visit the park to take pictures at Hiawatha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall, but it also has volleyball courts, a disc golf course, gardens and picnic areas.
