Minnehaha is next to one of Minneapolis’ most popular parks

Minnehaha is a quaint neighborhood that shares a name with one of Minneapolis ’ most popular parks. Older homes fill the area and are often priced lower than those in surrounding communities. Living here means you can easily walk or bike to Minnehaha Regional Park, a 170-acre park that attracts people from across the Twin Cities with its 53-foot falls. There are a handful of cafes and restaurants in the neighborhood, as well as a locally owned grocery store. Highway access makes it easy to get to downtown Minneapolis, about 5 miles away.

Early-1900s homes are less expensive than nearby communities

Most of the homes in Minnehaha were built before 1940, including colorful Craftsman styles, workers cottages and Tudor Revivals. As you move farther south, you can find some mid-20th-century cottages and new construction. There are also some townhouses and condos, although those are less common. While the winter has plenty of snow, the warmer months bring shaded sidewalks and blooming gardens. Back alleys lead to driveways and detached garages, or you can park on the street.

The median single-family home price is lower in Minnehaha than it is in Keewaydin or Hiawatha. “Minnehaha is, I would say, a lot more affordable,” says Realtor Andrea Vorachek, who has lived in Minneapolis since 2008. Prices generally range from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$800,000s, while townhouses and condos cost between the mid-$100,000s and the mid-$200,000s.

Minnehaha Regional Park has hiking trails and a stunning waterfall

The neighborhood stretches to Minnehaha Regional Park, a sprawling park where Minnehaha Creek meets the Mississippi River. There, you can:

  • Hike with your friends up to Minnehaha Falls
  • Canoe and kayak along the creek
  • Play a round of disc golf
  • Bring your kids to the Wabun Universal Access Play Area
  • Let your dogs run around the dog park
The park attracts people from across the Twin Cities. “It can get very busy, so you need to get out there early,” Vorachek says.

Students can attend the highly rated Lake Nokomis Community School

Minnehaha is part of the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District. Students can start at Lake Nokomis Community School, which is split into Wenonah Elementary School, which has kindergarten and first grade, and Keewaydin Elementary School, which serves second through fifth grade. Both campuses are highly rated. While most students attend their assigned school, the district offers some flexibility through intradistrict transfer applications and citywide magnet schools.

While biking is an option, more people drive

Minnehaha is walkable and bikeable, but to a lesser extent than neighborhoods like Kingfield. “The majority of people bike for pleasure, not to get where they’re going,” Vorachek says. “But, there are plentiful bike lanes, and a lot of people bike to work. I would just say it’s not the norm.” Instead, she says more people drive, especially because of easy access to Hiawatha Avenue and Highway 62. You can reach downtown Minneapolis in about 5 miles (15 minutes) and downtown Saint Paul in about 10 miles (20 minutes). Metro Transit buses and the Blue Line Light Rail stop throughout the neighborhood.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport is less than 5 miles away, but Vorachek says you hear planes less in Minnehaha than in Keewaydin.

Local restaurants include cafes, breakfast spots and a bar

While Minnehaha is more of a residential neighborhood, there are a handful of local restaurants to choose from. Options include:

  • Crema Coffee & Cream, a cafe with soft serve gelato
  • Asa’s Bakery, a local favorite known for its bread, bagels and bialys
  • Fusion Pancake House, a casual breakfast spot with fun twists on breakfast classics
  • Town Hall Lanes, a neighborhood bar and restaurant with a bowling alley
  • Sea Salt Eatery, a seasonal seafood place in Minnehaha Regional Park
You’re also minutes from Lyndale, which is home to the LynLake district, and Whittier, where you can find some of South Minneapolis’ most popular restaurants along Eat Street. Residents can get groceries from Oxendale’s Market, just off 34th Avenue.
