Wenonah has access to the airport and Lake Nokomis

Wenonah is a suburban neighborhood tucked between Lake Nokomis and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in south Minneapolis. Residents can walk to the lake from their bungalows and ramblers, while top schools and popular restaurants are within a few miles. Downtown is also an easy drive via state Highway 62 and Interstate 35W.

What homebuyers often pay for bungalows and ramblers

Wenonah is filled mainly with Craftsman-style bungalows and ramblers built between the 1920s and the 1960s, with a few Tudor-style and Cape Cod houses sprinkled throughout. Homes here often range from the upper $100,000s to the lower $500,000s. The neighborhood tends to be less expensive than surrounding areas like Diamond Lake, Hale and Keewaydin, but it is roughly in line with nearby Minnehaha.

The Nokomis East Neighborhood Association supports the community

Wenonah is one of four neighborhoods in the Nokomis East region of south Minneapolis, alongside Keewaydin, Minnehaha and Morris Park. The Nokomis East Neighborhood Association supports all four communities through projects like the Nokomis East Food Shelf, which distributes food twice per month to residents in need. It also hosts events like garage sales and food truck rallies. In comparison with Keewaydin to the north, “Wenonah feels a bit quieter and more tucked away,” says CJ Norman, a real estate agent with Norman Homes at Pemberton Real Estate. “But they both have that same comfortable, residential south Minneapolis feel.” The area’s streets are lined with trees whose leaves change color each fall. Front yards are often grassy and can have bushes or trees. Some homes, like those along 21st Avenue South, are on top of small hills, with stairs leading down to the street. The neighborhood can hear planes passing overhead, but many homes have upgrades like insulation to limit the noise.

Lake Nokomis Park is a popular place to relax

Norman says residents often head to Lake Nokomis Park to enjoy the outdoors. Jogging and biking paths circle the lake, helping people reach the park’s beaches, fishing pier, boat dock, sports fields and ice rink. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, swan boats and family bikes are available to rent. Away from the lake, people can visit Bossen Field Park for sports courts, a wading pool and a playground, and Airport Dog Park gives furry friends plenty of space to run free.

Minnehaha Regional Park, one of the city’s most popular green spaces, is roughly 2 miles away. The park is home to Minnehaha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall, as well as bike paths, a disc golf course, volleyball courts and gardens.

Students are zoned for a highly rated district

The neighborhood falls under the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District. Lake Nokomis Wenonah Elementary School is in the community and gets high ratings. Students can also attend any school outside of the district that is not at capacity, thanks to Minnesota’s open-enrollment policy. Other options include citywide magnet schools, which use enrollment lotteries, and private schools like the nearby Our Lady of Peace Catholic School.

The community is just over 8 miles from downtown Minneapolis, home to national companies like U.S. Bank. It's also where people can watch concerts at the Orpheum Theatre and other venues. The commute takes 15 to 30 minutes via state Highway 62 and Interstate 35W, depending on traffic. Metro Transit buses make stops in the neighborhood and get you downtown in 35 to 55 minutes on average. It’s about a 10-minute drive to the parking lots at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

Nearby restaurants offer pizza, baked goods and a famous burger

There are no restaurants in Wenonah, but residents don’t have to go far to grab a bite to eat. “One thing people seem to appreciate is that the [Lake Nokomis] area has a lot of locally owned spots that have been around for years,” Norman says, and people have the chance to try several popular places:

  • The 5-8 Club is known for its cheese-filled Juicy Lucy burgers.
  • Fat Lorenzo’s serves pizza and pasta in a casual space.
  • Nokomis Beach Coffee offers breakfast and drinks next to Lake Nokomis.
  • Berry Sweet Kitchen & Bar has baked goods, sandwiches and cocktails.
  • The Tipsy Steer makes elevated, southern-style bar food.
Groceries can be picked up at Oxendale’s Market or at Lunds & Byerlys, both within 2 miles.
