Ericsson residents enjoy the outdoors in South Minneapolis
Lakes, parks and trails surround Ericsson, located in South Minneapolis. The heart of the neighborhood’s recreation is Lake Hiawatha, but Minnehaha Creek and Lake Nokomis are nearby. This love of the outdoors extends to schools, where programs encourage kids to learn about the environment. After spending hours outside, you can unwind with dinner at one of the area’s local restaurants. Even though Ericsson feels like a natural escape, public transportation and highway access make it easy for residents to get across the Twin Cities.
Lake Hiawatha is in the neighborhood, with Lake Nokomis nearby
Lake Hiawatha Park is at the center of Ericsson’s recreation and is one of the many lakes across the Twin Cities. Of course, people spend hours kayaking or fishing on the water, but there are plenty of other activities you can do. Options include:
Spending the winter on the cross-country ski trail
Cooling off during the summer at the wading pool
Practicing your turns on the ice-skating rink
Bringing your kids to the playground
Meeting friends for a tee-time at the public 18-hole course
Outdoor recreation goes beyond the lake, with multiuse trails lining Minnehaha Parkway and leading to Minnehaha Regional Park in Hiawatha. “Minnehaha Creek meanders along the southern border,” says Realtor Nick Archer with Coldwell Banker Realty. “It is also close to Lake Nokomis, so its location near the best nature has to offer makes it popular with those who appreciate the outdoors.” Besides its trails, boat launch and athletic fields, Lake Nokomis, located in Keewaydin, hosts the annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championship every January.
1920s homes include charming Tudor Revivals and Craftsman styles
Most of the homes in the neighborhood date back to the 1920s, including Craftsman bungalows and Tudor Revivals. While many properties have updated appliances, you’ll still find original woodwork and hardwood floors that help preserve the area’s historic charm. There are some mid-20th-century cottages and New Traditional houses, but those are harder to come by. The median single-family home price is slightly higher than in Minnehaha, with prices ranging from the mid-$200,000s to the low $800,0000s.
The Standish-Ericsson Neighborhood Association brings residents together through community events, such as the three-day garage sale held every June. One of the highlights of the year is Neighborhood Day, where people trade gardening tools and tips at Lake Hiawatha.
Northrop Elementary School encourages students to get outside
Ericsson is part of the Minneapolis Public School District, which earns a B from Niche. The neighborhood is zoned for the B-plus-rated Northrop Elementary School, which encourages students to spend time outside with two outdoor classrooms and the Midwest Food Connection garden. The curriculum has a heavy STEM and environmental focus.
Residents eat at local restaurants in and around Ericsson
Ericsson residents have plenty of restaurant options, both in the neighborhood and in nearby communities. This is just a taste of what’s available:

There are also a handful of local shops in the area, including Doodle Bird Designs and Gifts and Angry Catfish Bicycles, the latter of which sells bikes and does repairs. Nearby grocery options include Lunds & Byerlys and Cub Foods.
Walkable and bikeable neighborhood with access to the Blue Line
Many people walk or ride their bikes as their main form of transportation, especially with the Minnehaha Parkway and so much to do within walking distance. For longer trips, most residents drive, with major roads like Orson Memorial Highway easily accessible. Downtown Minneapolis is about 5 miles (15 minutes) away, and downtown Saint Paul is about 10 miles (25 minutes) away. Public transportation is also available, with Metro Transit buses and the Blue Line light rail stopping in the neighborhood.
Ericsson is in the flight path of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, and residents are used to the sounds of planes overhead.

Great neighborhood to live no matter where you are in life. I love being able to walk to lakes (Hiwatha and Nokomis), a creek, coffee shops, bakeries, bars, the light rail, and biking opens even more possibilities. It's still somewhat affordable for being such a gem.
