What homeowners can pay for single-family homes and duplexes

Craftsman-style homes, bungalows and American Foursquares are spread throughout the area, along with a few Tudor-style houses. “On average, [the homes] were built from 1900 to the 1940s,” says Trevor Howat, a Realtor with the Chad Schwendeman Group at EXP Realty. Prices often range from around $70,000 to the upper $300,000s. Duplexes and townhomes can run from the mid-$100,000s to the upper $300,000s. The community is almost evenly split between homeowners and renters, who typically live in apartments and bungalows. The neighborhood tends to be more expensive than nearby Folwell, but less expensive than Cleveland and Willard-Hay.

The area has a community council and a historic theater

Jordan is one of six neighborhoods that make up the larger Near North region of Minneapolis. The community has wide streets, and cars are often parked along the curb. Sidewalks are well-kept and often shaded by trees, making it easy for people to get around the neighborhood. The Jordan Area Community Council was created in 1964 and provides residents with information on financial and health services. It also hosts community clean-ups and block parties, among other events. The area is home to the historic Capri Theater, which opened in 1927 and hosts movie screenings, concerts and live performances. It’s where Prince made his solo debut in 1979.

Students are zoned for a highly rated district

Students are served by the highly rated Minneapolis Public School District. The state has open enrollment, meaning students can attend any school outside of the district that has room. Other nearby options include private schools like Ascension Elementary School and citywide magnet schools like Franklin STEAM Middle School, which uses an enrollment lottery.

Easy commutes to downtown and to the northeast

The community is around 3 miles from downtown Minneapolis, which is home to theaters, sports arenas and the headquarters of national companies like Target. Commuting downtown takes 10-15 minutes by car. Metro Transit buses can get riders there in 20-25 minutes. The buses make several stops along Penn Avenue North and West Broadway Avenue. It’s also possible to bike there, since many major roads in the region have striped bike lanes.

Downtown is not the only commercial part of the city within reach. “You’re only a few minutes from the Northeast [Minneapolis Arts District] as well,” Howat says. “There are a lot of neighborhood restaurants and bars there.” The area also hosts Art-a-Whirl, one of the largest art festivals in the country, each May, combining gallery tours with food and live music.

Residents can visit several nearby parks

Though Jordan is residential, people can easily get to parks and other green spaces when they want to have fun. Options include:

  • Victory Memorial Parkway, a popular biking route
  • Theodore Wirth Regional Park, a large space with a golf course, a lake and hiking trails
  • Cottage Park, a small area with swings and a jungle gym
  • Jordan Park, which has a baseball diamond and a playground
  • Folwell Park, home to several sports fields and a picnic area

The diversity here is amazing if that is something that is important to you. The city also just built a new express bus line down Penn Ave. However, since I've lived here for 3 years I can tell you there are some major downsides. The crime is quite high. Everyweek I hear gunshots in my area, and often people are posting on Nextdoor about theft, break ins and assaults. As a woman I never go outside after dark. There is also a general lack of care for the neighborhood, I often find trash in my yard and my neighbors yards. At night it is quite noisy, I can hear cars drag racing, loud music, or fireworks 5 months a year. At night people also speed through the stop sign by my house and I've witnessed quite a few Tbone accidents from this. I don't have kids so I can't comment on the schools. like how this area is being developed by the city, but I can't take the crime and noise anymore. I am considering moving somewhere else soon.

For drinkers, they have dozens of micro breweries, so it is common to have a lot of local beers on tap. Not a drinker myself, but they are out there if you like that sort of thing. The food around here is in mass variety, and generally always delicious. If you have a type of food you like, minus Filipino cuisine, Minneapolis or surrounding areas have what you want.

There is a lot to do here in Minneapolis. Downtown is fun, there are several businesses from entertainment to fine restaurants in the city. You can attend the Target Center for a basketball game, or Target Field for a baseball game. We have dozens of shopping centers, and one close by that everyone knows about: Mall of America.

The jobs here in my area are very minimal and low paying jobs. There are several fast food businesses here that hire anyone who just walks in. There has begun to pop up several new businesses that look promising, but we need to still see the results in a couple years. Because some businesses start good but close within a year or 2.
