Willard-Hay has a vibrant arts scene near Minneapolis’ largest park
Willard-Hay is a Minneapolis neighborhood surrounded by Northside landmarks, and there's always plenty to do. Not only is Prince’s childhood home in the neighborhood, but so is the venue where he played his first shows. Part of the 13-block West Broadway Cultural District is on the eastern end of Willard-Hay, and the sprawling Theodore Wirth Regional Park is to the west. Metro Transit buses and highway access make it easy to get across the Twin Cities.
West Broadway is home to shops, restaurants and third spaces
Colorful murals decorate the West Broadway Cultural District, the heart of North Minneapolis. Part of the district is in Willard-Hay, including the historic Capri Theater, where Prince performed his first solo shows on January 5 and 6, 1979. There are also plenty of restaurants, shops and community centers along West Broadway, including:
Sammy’s Avenue Eatery, a popular sandwich spot
Lion’s Den Cafe, a community staple that serves soul food
Hy-Vee, where most residents get their groceries
Juxtaposition Arts, a nonprofit art center and studio space
Harold Mezile North Community YMCA, which has programs for people of all ages
West Broadway hosts several events throughout the year to celebrate the community, including the annual Black Business Week Street Mall, a free vendor market at the Capri Theater that showcases Black-owned businesses across the city. It is also one of the co-hosts of the city-wide Open Streets series, where different parts of Minneapolis close down their streets for a block party with live music, free activities and opportunities to explore local businesses.
Early-1900s homes and new development in the neighborhood
Older homes fill most of the neighborhood, including Tudor Revivals, Craftsman bungalows and Foursquares built in the early 1900s. Many of these houses have been updated with modern appliances, and some have been converted into duplexes. There is new construction in the area, which often tries to blend in with the older architecture. “Theodore Wirth Park attracts many buyers, and the area is becoming more developed every day,” says Michael Gacek, Realtor with Edina Realty, who has worked in the area for over 25 years. Well-maintained gardens decorate the front yards during the warmer months, while back alleys lead to driveways and detached garages. There is some street parking available. The median single-family home price is comparable to nearby communities like Near North, with prices ranging from the mid-$100,000s to the high $400,000s. Over 40% of the residents rent.
Foursquares are some of the early-1900s homes in the neighborhood.
Craftsman bungalows are common in the neighborhood.

Outdoor fun at Theodore Wirth and smaller community parks
Theodore Wirth Regional Park spans over 740 acres, making it the largest park in the city. There’s plenty to do, no matter the time of year. In winter, the miles of trails normally used by cyclists and joggers can be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. During the summer, people can play volleyball at the sandy beaches along Wirth Lake or meet friends for a game at the 18-hole public golf course. You can walk through the colorful Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and explore the natural history exhibits at the Crone Visitor Shelter. There are also several smaller parks in the area, including:
Willard Park, which has a recreation center and a splash pad
North Commons Park, where you can find ballfields and tennis courts
Bethune Park, which includes a playground, basketball court and picnic area
Bethune Park hosts the annual Celebrating Freedom Day, one of the city’s Juneteenth events. There are kid-friendly games, live music and local vendors selling food, crafts and more.
In the winter, people head to Theodore Wirth Regional Park to go skiing.
Theodore Wirth Regional Park is a great spot to shoot some hoops.

Bikes, cars and buses make it easy to get around
Willard-Hay is walkable and bikeable, especially if you’re heading to the park or to one of the restaurants along West Broadway. Otherwise, most people drive themselves, with major roads like Olson Memorial Highway and Penn Avenue in the neighborhood and Interstate 94 nearby. It’s a 5-mile (10-minute) drive to downtown Minneapolis and about 15 miles (30 minutes) to downtown Saint Paul. Public transportation is also an option, with Metro Transit buses and the C bus rapid transit line stopping in the area.

The local businesses around the neighborhood are great. They are small but well-runned. I wish there were more stores to shop at. People have to travel at least 10-15 minutes or more in order to find a decent mall.

Crimes ever hardly happen around this area, the worst that has happen is people creating a public disturbance by shooting small fire crackers for about 3 months.
