A city suburb with a small-town feel
Although Northrop is only about 5 miles from downtown Minneapolis, this Hennepin County neighborhood still contains classic suburban features, such as a close-knit community and access to well-maintained green spaces. Realtor Tyler Dill, a lifelong Minneapolis resident, says, "We're known for our lakes and parks, and people in this neighborhood have direct access to them. The moment it warms up, residents are out and about, walking on the trails and saying hi to each other." Realtor Liina Roth, a Twin Cities resident of over 20 years, also describes Northrop as a "well-rounded neighborhood” with “many fun restaurants, bike trails and highways nearby, so people can easily commute to the Twin Cities." Homes in this area range between $250,000 and $700,000.

From Craftsman to Tudor-style home
Northrop features an eclectic mix of architecture, with everything from ramblers to Tudor-style homes. "Most homes were built during the 50s and 60s, so you have lots of solid, one-and-a-half-story homes that are easily updated," Dill explains. According to Roth, homes near Minnehaha Parkway are particularly unique: "There was this house that I called the 'Barney House' because it was so colorful. The residents here aren't afraid to customize their homes." Prices start at $250,000 and go up to $700,000, with the average home selling for around $400,000. The neighborhood also has street parking and sidewalks.

Visiting Lake Nokomis Park
While Northrop has some smaller green spaces scattered throughout the neighborhood, nearby Lake Nokomis Park is a real standout. Lake Nokomis is one of the three sailing lakes in Minneapolis, offering canoe, kayak and paddle board rentals. The park also has walking & biking trails, sports fields, a dock, a beach, ice skating rink and more. Minnehaha Creek runs through the neighborhood's south end, and residents can follow the extensive trails along its banks.

Shopping and dining around Northrop
Several boutique shops and local dining options border the neighborhood. Roth personally recommends the Jucy Lucy burger from Matt's Bar and Grill: "I love that place. It's so fun. Even President Obama has visited!" Another favorite is ie-Italian Eatery, described by locals as some of the best Italian food in the city. Across the street is Lunds & Byerlys Nokomis, a store providing groceries and other basic needs.

It's a marathon, not a sprint
Because of Northop's proximity to Lake Nokomis and Minnehaha Parkway, residents also participate in the events held there. During the winter, Lake Nokomis holds the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. "You've got people coming in from everywhere to play hockey, and there's no parking anywhere close to the lake," Dill says. The Twin Cities Marathon is another major event Northop residents can participate in, since part of the course runs through the neighborhood.
Getting around the Twin Cities
West of Northrop is Interstate 35, which residents can take to downtown Minneapolis, about a 5-mile drive away. Public transportation options are also available, with various bus lines running along Bloomington Avenue, Chicago Avenue and East 46th Street.
Northrop bikers can hop on the Minnehaha trail and ride for miles.
