A rich blend of cultures near downtown Minneapolis
Just south of downtown Minneapolis, Ventura Village offers affordable, historic multifamily housing. The neighborhood’s convenient-to-downtown location and overall walkability attract buyers, as does the area’s rich diversity. “It’s one of the more diverse areas of Minneapolis,” says Michael Kootsikas, who’s sold real estate in the area for nearly 10 years. “Lots of different languages are spoken, and most people speak multiple languages.” Immigrants make up more than a third of the neighborhood’s population: residents here shop from Somali markets, dine at Colombian cafes and learn Native American gardening techniques, attracting those who seek diversity to this particular portion of the city.

Indigenous-owned coffee shops, Somalian markets and Columbian cafes
Residents come from all over Minneapolis for Colombian fare at Maria’s Café, which is bustling on weekends when patrons line up for plates full of corn pancakes. Nearby, Golden Fingers serves some of the area’s best Mediterranean food, and the Indigenous-owned coffee shop Pow Wow Grounds is an everyday hangout committed to keeping their food prices low. In the spirit of community service, they offer patrons the opportunity to pay for the coffee of a customer who might not be able to afford it. Residents can pick up groceries and other essentials at Dollar General and ALDI. At 24 Somali Mall, shoppers can buy products from various Somali businesses, including clothing shops and eateries.

Addressing food justice with community gardens and free meals
To address food justice issues in the community, the 24th Street Urban Farm Coalition founded the community garden Mashkiikii Gitigan – Ojibwe for “medicine garden” – in 2013. What was once a vacant lot now serves as a community space where any resident can grow food, and the garden hosts free weekly classes from May through October to help residents learn how to do so. The season kicks off with a spring garden blessing and closes with a fall harvest celebration. Free meals are available every day of the week in Ventura Village, provided by various local organizations, and a full schedule of pickup times is available on the neighborhood’s website.

Walk, bike or take the light rail downtown
With an 82/100 Walk Score, Ventura Village is highly walkable and has solid access to public transit, including the Franklin Avenue stop on the 12-mile light rail that connects downtown Minneapolis with other neighborhoods. “It’s very commuter-friendly because you can get right on the light rail, and you can even walk downtown if you want to,” says Keller Williams Realtor Shawn Korby. The area’s 94/100 Bike Score deems it a biker’s paradise, with spacious bike lanes along some side streets and part of the main thoroughfare of E. Franklin Avenue, lined with stores, restaurants, coffee shops and cultural centers. With Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Children’s Minnesota Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center all within a mile of the neighborhood, accessing medical care is easy, and the neighborhood’s a mere 20-minute drive from the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

Historic multifamily homes
Ventura Village has a mix of historic homes – mostly American Foursquares – townhouses and condos, though “A lot of the old Minneapolis Victorian homes are being converted into businesses,” Kootsikas says. He adds that the area is leaning increasingly commercial rather than residential and that residential options are primarily multifamily. Ventura Village offers buyers unique housing options, like condos at Cityview Cooperative, a collection of three brownstones where residents share ownership of the complex and use shared amenities like a community room and common green space. Condos in Ventura Village often sell for $50,000 to $150,000, while townhouses go for around $200,000 and $300,000 to $700,000 buys a multiunit investment property. The median price in Ventura Village is $175,000.

Parks, community centers and other resources
In 2012, Peavey Field Park was just four blocks of vacant land; today, it’s an oasis of green space in a sea of cement, equipped with a kid-friendly playground, basketball courts and soccer fields. After school and throughout the summer, the teen mentorship program Youthline meets here for educational programs, outdoor adventures and social activities. A group also meets at the Philips Community Center and the nearby East Phillips Park. At the Philips Community Center, residents can join clubs, exercise at its fitness center and sign up for swim lessons at its aquatics center. Additional resources are available at the Franklin Library, which offers programming like writing workshops, homework help and drop-in tech help. Ventura Village is also home to Norway House, a gathering space for Norwegian Americans in the Twin Cities.
