Neighborhood in Modesto, California
Stanislaus County 95358
Affordable 1980s housing stock and development history
Bret Harte's 1980s housing stock is full of personality, with an urban design complemented by the agricultural landscape. Stucco Craftsman, New Traditional and ranch-style homes pack in tight rows beside live oaks and swaying palm trees. These quiet, dead-end roads share the names of Western cities, like Dallas, Denver and Seattle streets. These fenced-in properties have a mix of lush landscaping and desert-style lots with less access to water. The Modesto Irrigation District offers lawn watering, although the city places limits on its timeframes. Some residences in Bret Harte avoid the issue altogether with tile courtyards or widened carports instead of traditional yards. While some houses have attached garages, on-street parking is standard for large families. With varying architecture from different eras of the 20th century, single-family prices range from $200,000 to $550,000, lower than the city's average. Manufactured homes are also available here, costing between $250,000 and $350,000. "Bret Harte has more affordable housing and more freeway access than other areas," says Michael Meneses, Real Estate Agent with PMZ Real Estate, who has over four years of experience. "There is a mixture of renters, first-time homeowners and long-term residents here."When Modesto planned to expand east in the 1990s, Bret Harte was in a prime location. One of the holdups to this expansion was developing Wood Colony, an agricultural area east of Bret Harte with a high Amish population. "A big part of our community is agricultural," Del Real says. "If you want to keep the ag and support the farms, there's beauty in keeping Wood Colony the same."
St. Salazar and Tuolumne River Park
Bret Harte has access to regional green spaces, athletic facilities and four community parks. St. Salazar Park is a 5-acre space with a sidewalk trail surrounding a large playground and basketball court. Bret Harte Park has a baseball diamond next to the Salvation Army Community Center. Fairview Park has picnic tables and a jungle gym in Stanislaus County. Bellenita Park is north of the river with well-manicured soccer fields shaded by Modesto Ash trees, and the Modesto Indoor Soccer complex hosts league tournaments and caters to reservations. The Tuolumne River Regional Park spans over 500 acres with a seven-mile greenway trail for riding bikes along the river. The St. Stanislaus Golf Course has a public driving range and nine holes.Opportunities in Modesto City schools
The Modesto City elementary and high school districts serve over 14,000 students in the area. Bret Harte Elementary School earns a D-plus grade from Niche and offers computer literacy courses and access to coding resources. Next to Bret Harte Elementary, Evelyn Hanshaw Middle School receives a C-minus to go along with its active sustainability programs with air quality monitoring and electric school buses. Thomas Downey High School receives a B and provides students with career and technical pathways in subjects like agriculture and nutrition. Modesto Junior College is a public two-year institution that enrolls over 24,000 students in associate programs centered in liberal arts, science or business administration.Bike, bus or Amtrak
Bret Harte is bike-friendly, although most residents have a personal automobile. StanRTA is the area's public transportation system, with bus stops along Hatch Road and throughout town. Modesto's Amtrak station is on the city's east end, roughly 9 miles away. State Route 99, just over a mile north, provides a way to North Modesto and Stockton, while San Francisco is about 91 miles west on state Route 132. The San Francisco International Airport provides flights to international destinations, while the Stockton Metropolitan Airport has domestic flights to cities like Phoenix, San Francisco and Las Vegas, among others.Shopping and dining on Crows Landing Road
Crows Landing Road highlights this colorful neighborhood with cultural restaurants and shops. "Crows Landing Road is where people go to eat somewhere cool," Del Real says. "You can go to a seafood place with a mariachi band. It's awesome, you know, it's like Mexico." Food trucks earn their reputation for having some of the best Mexican food in the valley. Las Morenas Taqueria is a mobile restaurant serving tacos and burritos in homemade tortillas with shaded picnic tables for seating. Another option is El Pollo Feliz, which serves chalupas in a vibrant dining space covered in murals. Cost Less Foods is on Hatch Road, while Cardenas Market has Mexican products on Crows Landing Road.El Rematito, which translates to "the auction," is a flea market with live music and dancing throughout the weekend. "The parking lot is always jam-packed, the music is blaring and people are selling handmade products," Del Real says. With space for nearly 550 vendors, El Rematito has quickly become one of the state's premier flea markets.
