Bret Harte is a welcoming Modesto hub with deep Latino community roots
Named after a Gold Rush-era poet, Bret Harte is the multicultural epicenter of Modesto , an agricultural city surrounded by almond orchards in California's Central Valley. South of the Tuolumne River, this neighborhood has a reputation for its cultural diversity. This majority-Latino community is teeming with authentic Mexican eateries and vibrant street markets close to the city's heart, making it a welcoming place for first-generation Americans. "My parents came here because they wanted to slow life down, buy a home and accomplish the American dream," says Daniel Del Real, Real Estate agent on the Del Real Team at PMZ Commercial with over 20 years of experience in Modesto. "First-generation Americans come from the Bay Area and find their culture in Bret Harte."

Mariachi restaurants and the El Rematito street market
Colorful restaurants and shops are on Crows Landing Road, a thoroughfare with many Latin-American establishments. "It's where people go to eat somewhere cool," Del Real says. "You can find a seafood place with a mariachi band. It's awesome. It's like Mexico." Food trucks earn their reputation for having some of the best Mexican food in the valley. One example is Las Morenas Taqueria, which has homemade tortillas and shaded picnic tables. For indoor seating, El Pollo Feliz serves chalupas in a dining room with colorful murals. The area's supermarkets include Cost Less Foods and Cardenas Market, a Latino grocery store on Crows Landing Road.
One of the city's most well-established events, El Rematito, which means "the auction," has been a tradition since 1989. This year-round flea market features live music and dancing throughout the weekend. "The parking lot is always jam-packed. The music is blaring, and people are selling handmade products," Del Real says. With nearly 550 street vendors, El Rematito has quickly become one of California's most popular flea markets.
Fresh produce from nearby farmers can be found at Cardenas Markets along Bret Harte's border.

Mix of renters and first-time buyers with 1980s stucco homes
Bret Harte's 1980s homes complement the agricultural landscape with lush gardens and desert-style lots. Stucco Craftsman and ranch-style homes pack in tight rows beside live oaks and swaying palm trees. Single-family home prices range from $220,000 to $400,000. Home prices are lower compared to other Modesto neighborhoods. "Bret Harte has more affordable housing and more freeway access than many other areas," says Michael Meneses, Real Estate Agent with PMZ Real Estate, who has over four years of experience. "It has a mixture of renters, first-time homeowners and long-term residents."
When Modesto planned to expand east in the 1990s, Bret Harte was in a prime location. One of the holdups to this expansion was developing a farming area east of Bret Harte. "A big part of our community is agricultural," Del Real says. "We want to keep the agriculture and support the farms. There's beauty in keeping those things the same." Like most cities in the Central Valley, Modesto faces poor air quality caused by agriculture, traffic and the area's topography. It also has extreme heat due to its inland location, with hot and dry summers that bring temperatures over 100°F.
