Wanskuck, once a textile community, now a growing enclave

Some people have a soft spot for Wanskuck: this neighborhood started out as a hub for cotton and wool, but now it’s seen as a place with a striving spirit. Once the textile mills left, Wanskuck struggled with its identity, but organizations like the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation are renovating homes to make it an up-and-coming destination. You might say that Wanskuck offers a lifestyle suited to pioneers who want a hand in shaping the neighborhood’s future. 30-year associate broker Andy Goulet with Alltown Real Estate Group says, “Wanskuck is a predominantly municipal area spaced from Providence’s metropolitan center; it has a suburban feel with amenities and not as many multi-family properties or condensed city subdivisions.”

Renovated homes with modern tastes

Many homes in Wanskuck are in the $300,000 to $400,000 range, with styles leaning towards modest but timeless. Goulet says, “Most of the homes here are midcentury builds.” For example, you can find renovated ranches from the 1970s with sleek, contemporary style features. Properties such as these are fenced, and yet, situated next to similar styles, there’s a cohesive sense of community here. If you’re looking for a modern house, sans the renovations, you can also find split-level homes from the 1990s with distinguishing features such as bay windows, a finished basement and a back deck.

Diverse green spaces for recreation in Wanskuck

Parks are an essential part of daily life here. Hopkins Park is great for a game of soccer, while Mansion Park is suited for enjoying playground facilities or outdoor fitness stations. More athletic facilities, like tennis courts and basketball courts, can be found at Corliss Park. If you like to fish, try the reservoir at Whipples Pond. The namesake Wanskuck Park is the biggest green space, totaling 25 acres. Roam an open grassy field or stroll the wooded trails. See if you can spy the remnants of history, too, such as the stone wall skirting the park.

North Providence hosts ample commercial businesses to browse

Wanskuck borders Charles, another neighborhood known for its industrial past. As these developed over the years, it became clear that North Providence was a distinct destination. You’ll still see a strong commercial streak in these areas today. Douglas Avenue, Branch Avenue and Admiral Street are all widely considered the major thoroughfares of Wanskuck. Eateries like LaSalle Bakery are practically neighborhood institutions, receiving a bounty of press. Travel and Leisure Magazine says that the bakery’s pizza strips helped make Providence it’s number two choice in America for pizza.

Take the bus through Providence or drive on I-95

Goulet says, “Most developments were made in the 50s and 60s, so mostly vehicular commuting is popular in the neighborhood.” Public buses service Douglas and Branch Avenues, making it easy to reach basic amenities like CVS. Resting beside the bustling Interstate 95 has its benefits for drivers, as Wanskuck residents are able to take road trips to major metropolitan centers up and down the east coast all on one highway. With these amenities drawing people who want to shape the future of Wanskuck, this former textile center is aiming for a soft landing.

my community is alright. I have neighbors who are very friendly and will ask how I am doing as I walk my dog, and then there are others in my community who are loud, rude, and I do not feel comfortable around them. traffic is sometimes an issue but its manageable and there are convenient stores in short walking distance.
