Conveniently located just steps from the popular shops and restaurants of downtown Palm Springs, The Movie Colony is known as one of the city's most popular neighborhoods for Hollywood stars. "Some of the more current celebrities are peppered around, but back in the day, the neighborhood of choice was The Movie Colony. That's why they called it that, because they had so many stars," says John White, a Realtor with Equity Union who has sold multiple homes in the neighborhood, including one that belonged to Bob Hope. This relatively small neighborhood is made up of a few blocks of houses just east of Palm Canyon Drive. Buyers here can live among the stars while having easy access to all that downtown Palm Springs offers, including highly-rated restaurants, local shops and eclectic art exhibits.

A mix of traditional and contemporary styles in The Movie Colony

The Movie Colony has a mix of housing styles throughout the neighborhood, but the area is most known for its traditional Spanish-style homes in the southwest corner. These homes typically have white stucco siding and red tile roofs. They often have porches spanning the entire front of the house with arched entryways. Other homes include midcentury modern houses with either flat or A-frame roofs. Buyers in The Movie Colony can find homes with large yards and plenty of room for at-home recreation or landscaping. "Some of the largest estates in town are actually in there. They're sometimes built up on a couple of acres. It's very hedged up and very private," White says. Many homes have backyard pools, tennis courts, or both. Buyers can expect to pay between $2 million and $6 million, depending on the square footage of the house. Like much of Palm Springs, there is a risk of wildfires in The Movie Colony, calculated at about 0.2% according to Risk Factor.

Easy access to all the popular downtown destinations

Living in The Movie Colony puts residents just minutes from downtown Palm Springs, home to many shops and restaurants that fit any taste. Café La Jefa is a popular spot to start the day, with traditional coffee drinks, breakfast sandwiches and avocado toast on a vibrant outdoor patio. Tac/Quila is a modern Mexican restaurant with eclectic décor. This popular eatery is known for dishes like short rib enchiladas, lobster tacos and margarita flights. Heading further south on Palm Canyon Drive will lead residents to shopping centers like La Plaza and Mercado Plaza, each home to local stores selling clothes, gifts and jewelry. Groceries are available just north of the neighborhood at Stater Bros. on East Vista Chino or Albertsons on Sunrise Way.

Get ready to serve or enjoy a stroll at local parks

Ruth Hardy Park is one of the most popular green spaces in the city and is located in The Movie Colony. This 22-acre park has several activities, including eight tennis courts that some locals consider the best public tennis courts available. The park also has a playground, basketball courts and sand volleyball courts. Residents can visit The Wellness Park at the corner of Techevah Drive and Via Miraleste. This 5.5-acre park is landscaped with desert plants and features a fitness course and walking paths. Palm Springs International Airport is about 2.5 miles east of the neighborhood, a drive that takes less than 10 minutes. Residents have easy access to healthcare with Desert Regional Medical Center just north of the community on Tachevah Drive. Public transit is also easily accessible, with multiple bus stops on Indian Canyon Drive. Routes 1 and 4 of SunLine Transit serve the neighborhood, taking riders downtown, to the airport and as far west as Rancho Mirage.
