Storms and industry losses push Perry toward new growth
Perry is a community near Florida's Gulf Coast known as the "Tree Capital of the South" that is experiencing change. "Perry is a very laid-back area. Though it's not on the beach, it's still very beach-oriented. The downtown is going through a revitalization," says Preston Miller, an experienced real estate agent with Southern Land & Homes. The surrounding timberlands and pine forests once sustained the region's lumber industry. However, multiple unforeseen circumstances impacted the local economy, including Hurricane Idalia and the closure of the Georgia Pacific Foley Plant in 2023, as well as the West Fraser Timber Company's sawmill shutdown in 2024. These events prompted the city to focus on growth. Perry maintains its recreational appeal with outdoor destinations like the nearby coast, rivers and local green spaces. The area is also the seat of Taylor County, and its sole incorporated city.
The City of Perry and the Perry-Taylor Chamber of Commerce are leading a downtown renewal project focused on long-term growth.

There are multiple community green spaces within 2 miles of downtown. Residents can start the day at Veterans Memorial Park and walk a few blocks to Heritage or Perry City Park. Rosehead Park has a pond, walking path and picnic areas. The county's Big Bend Brewfest is held here in March. Along Highway 221 stands a splashpad and playground. Glenn Ratliff Memorial Park Taylor County Sports Complex spans 74 acres. The grounds include a play area, paved walking path and tennis and basketball courts. There are several athletic fields, and the city plans to add another softball field. The Florida Forest Festival is held at Forest Capital Museum State Park. The event highlights the area's industrial heritage and includes the "World's Largest Free Fish Fry." Big Bend Wildlife Management Area, about 20 miles towards the coast, is a hot spot for fishing and hunting. Miller says that species like redfish and bass are common in the region. Locals are about 20 to 25 miles from the nearest Taylor County boat ramps. The Mandalay Boat Ramp, on the Aucilla River, is navigable to the ocean. Keaton Beach Boat Ramp provides direct access to the Florida Gulf.
