Diverse neighborhood in Providence with Italian heritage
Italian American immigrants settled Federal Hill in the early 1900s, and this rich heritage defines the neighborhood’s cultural, architectural and culinary footprint. “When a local person thinks of Federal Hill, they think of Atwells Avenue,” says Jim DeRentis, fourth-generation Providence native and Realtor at Residential Properties. "It's where the Italian ethos is. It tends to be younger, hipper and more creative. It’s a really nice, diverse neighborhood. People really like it.”

Intimate Italian restaurants and dining on Atwells Avenue
“There’s a lot of cool independent businesses and great restaurants and pubs in Federal Hill,” DeRentis says. Atwells Avenue is home to a large collection of intimate Italian eateries offering everything from Il Massimo’s upscale seasonal dishes to the old-school pasta fagioli at Angelo’s Civita Farnese, which has been serving the community since 1924. “Al Fresco on the Hill” is Atwells Avenue’s newest culinary tradition; every weekend from May to October, the avenue closes to traffic, transforming the road to accommodate outdoor seating for 30 restaurants and live entertainment. For grocery necessities, locals can visit Tony’s Colonial Food, a specialty grocer with an authentic Italian Deli and a wide selection of fine wines, chocolates, oils and more.

Entertainment at DePasquale Square and massive crowds on Columbus Day weekend
Residents also gather year-round at DePasquale Square, an Italian-inspired piazza anchored by a central fountain, lined with eateries and strung with twinkling lights. In the summertime, the piazza hosts concerts, too. Federal Hill is also home to wildly popular events: “The annual Columbus Day Festival and parade is there every year. They paint the Italian flag’s colors on the streets. It has that sort of reputation,” DeRentis says. The Columbus Day Festival in October shuts down streets and draws about 150,000 people over the weekend. The event has Italian food vendors, a parade, and plenty of games and live entertainment.
Multifamily triple-deckers, Italianate and Victorian homes
Most Federal Hill residents live in the multifamily triple-deckers characteristic of Providence, many dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. These multiunit properties may cost between $700,000 and $800,000, while less common single-family homes sell in the $450,000 to $600,000 range. The recent influx of condominiums throughout the area provides an alternative housing option. Federal Hill is distinguished by its many historical structures, including ornate Victorians with decorative trim and red brick Italianate row houses. Broadway, a thoroughfare home to private residences as well as over 15 law offices, is known for its impressive collection of preserved Victorian and Greek Revival mansions.
