Federal Hill offers historic charm near Downtown Providence

Federal Hill got its name after a protest on the Fourth of July in 1788, and the neighborhood has kept its independent streak ever since. The neighborhood, located just west of Downtown Providence, is known for its Italian restaurants, town square and active business scene. Narrow side streets, some still paved with cobblestones, branch off of Atwells Avenue, while DePasquale Square draws crowds in the warmer months. Beyond its main streets, the area is largely residential, while food markets, bakeries and boutique shops round out the neighborhood's strong culinary identity.

Century-old architecture, with single and multi-family options

High ceilings and hardwood floors are common, and many homes feature Victorian, Greek Revival and Italianate architecture. Homes sit close together on small lots, but established tree cover and backyard fences provide a degree of privacy between neighbors. With a median price of around $410,000, Federal Hill leans on the more affordable side of Providence.
