Federal Hill got its name after a protest on the Fourth of July in 1788, and the neighborhood has kept its independent streak ever since. The neighborhood, located just west of Downtown Providence, is known for its Italian restaurants, town square and active business scene. Narrow side streets, some still paved with cobblestones, branch off of Atwells Avenue, while DePasquale Square draws crowds in the warmer months. Beyond its main streets, the area is largely residential, while food markets, bakeries and boutique shops round out the neighborhood's strong culinary identity.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority operates local bus routes, with nearby stops along Broadway and Atwells Avenue. The Providence Amtrak station is close by, with the Acela train offering a 30-minute trip to downtown Boston. Additionally, Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is about a 15-minute drive away.

Federal Hill is part of the Providence Public School District. Many local students attend Asa Messer Elementary School and Paul Cuffee Middle School.
