Residential community next to a private airpark and near downtown
A mile west of Downtown Redding, the Greenwood neighborhood is bordered by a historic airpark undergoing revitalization. Its residential streets are framed by Airpark Drive and Gold Street, two throughways that share an interesting past and future. "The Benton Airpark is built on top of Redding's old gold mine," says Dillon Newbry, resident and Benton Airpark/Cardan Aircraft Services employee involved in relaunching the formerly-languishing facility in early 2024. "It was built in the 1920s as Redding's first airport; then Redding built a regional airport during WWII to accommodate bigger aircraft. In 2024, we're opening a new café at the airpark, The Golden Fang, that will be a great resource for Greenwood."
This Redding suburb is a mix of mostly midcentury remodels, with a handful of turn-of-the-century homes and newer 1990s builds. Quiet, sidewalked streets reach eastward from the private aircraft hangar to Railroad Avenue, which parallels Amtrak's railway into Redding Station. A large medical campus spans the southern border, including Mercy Medical Center Redding and Clairmont Doctors Park. Locals can walk to downtown eateries or to work in the medical park. Winters are typically mild, and summers are in the upper 90s, with scarce rainfall. Yet, the neighborhood's red clay foundation still supports green lawns, pines and roses.
Downtown Redding is within walking distance of Greenwood.

Community parks and playgrounds plus Schreder Planetarium
Dog owners walk to the Benton Dog Park, right next to the airpark. Pups can play in an inflatable pool and run around together. "It's also just really neat," adds Newbry, "that you can come to the airpark and hang out around the aviation culture, which is sometimes a kind of closed-off thing. It's very accessible. People bring little kids who want to be pilots or take air tours. We have a flight school and rental planes you can book for specific timeframes." The compact Martin Luther King Jr. Park, just a few blocks south on West Street, includes a playground and baseball diamond. To the north, Magnolia Park spreads out in front of the Shasta County Office of Education, offering an open grass lawn and playground. The Schreder Planetarium, which opened in 1979, also shares the park space. School groups routinely fill its 65-seat domed theater year-round field trips, and the general public enjoys Friday evening programs.

Midcentury through 1990s remodels with forest or mountain views
Many of Greenwood's homes were built between the 1930s and 1950s. Ranch styles prevail, with a small assortment of two-story homes. Pricing ranges from $270,000 to $335,000 for midcentury to 1970s homes. Homes built in the late 1980s and 1990s ask between $480,000 and $500,000. Some come with forested lots; others offer long-distance vistas of snow-capped ridges. "It's a beautiful neighborhood with lots of greenery and great views," says Meg Grotting, Realtor with Re/Max FiveStar since 2004. "A lot of the houses back up to greenbelts and feel really private, yet you're super close to a nice strip mall with a Holiday Market and CVS."

Golden Fang at Benton Airpark, Pourboys Tapyard and community theater
New to the neighborhood in mid-2024 is the Golden Fang, a cafe at the Benton Airpark. "We're making it into a smokehouse-theme café," says Newbry, "where people can get together for meals, whether they're flying in or driving over." Across Railroad Avenue, just west of Greenwood, Pourboys Tapyard is a local go-to for trivia nights, Taco Tuesdays and rotating food trucks and beers on tap. The region's longest continually operating all-volunteer community theatre, Riverfront Playhouse, is within a mile of central Greenwood. The theatre's year-round calendar features performances including "On Golden Pond," "The Outsiders" and "It's a Wonderful Life." Within a short walk or bike ride, a cluster of stores, coffee shops and restaurants are found downtown. For groceries, Holiday Market is 1.5 miles northwest of central Greenwood. "That Holiday Market on Placer Street," adds Grotting, "has this wonderful deli that makes awesome fresh sandwiches, and their produce is always super high quality."

Fun in the air on Father’s Day
On Father's Day, the Benton Airpark hosts a classic cars and air tours event, featuring rides out to the Shasta Dam and back. "The Young Eagles program," says Newbry, "which is an organization teaching youth about aviation, comes out to the event and demonstrates their high-end simulators. And people fly in from all over to show off their planes."
