A central Richmond community with access to city amenities
Midtown Richmond is a vibrant community in Richmond's bustling heart, befitting its name. Bounded by one of the liveliest streets in the city, West Broad Street, area residents are minutes from restaurants, shops and entertainment. Its desirable location has kickstarted an exciting redevelopment with welcomed growth and expansion, seen through new restaurants and developing condominium complexes. "This area is great because you can get downtown in a minute, or you can be west in a minute," says Realtor Anne Soffee of Small & Associates. "It's very walkable, and there's just a lot going on over here. You definitely benefit from the city amenities."
Contemporary homes and modern lofts
Many college students rent properties in this part of town, but ample longtime homeowners and families reside here. Down Moore Street are many contemporary colonials and townhomes that sit beside each other on shallow setbacks. These homes are often marked by tall, narrow windows and wide front porches. Homes cost anywhere between $250,000 and $550,000. There are also several condominium complexes in Midtown Richmond, including Todd Lofts, a historic brick factory building that has been renovated into units with high ceilings and all-inclusive amenities. Rent at Todd Lofts ranges from $1,200 to $2,300 per month. Other options include Cookie Factory Lofts, which feature tall ceilings and massive windows that offer neighborhood views. Midtown Richmond is a bike-friendly community, and there's a designated bike lane on West Leigh Street where locals can travel to Whole Foods, Movieland or Scott's Addition.
Home to one of the best schools in the state
Kids growing up in the area attend Richmond Public Schools, which scored an overall C-plus on Niche. Students first attend George W. Carver Elementary School, which has a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1 and a C-minus on Niche. Students advance to Albert Hill Middle School, which got a B on Niche. Students head to Thomas Jefferson High School to earn their diplomas. Niche gave the high school an overall B. Midtown Richmond is also home to the highly rated Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, a public regional magnet high school. Maggie Walker receives an overall rating of A-plus on Niche and is ranked as the second-best public high school in Virginia.
Relaxed days at Monroe Park
While popular for college students, many residents enjoy an afternoon picnic and free Wi-Fi in Monroe Park, at the heart of the VCU campus. Established in 1851, this is Richmond's oldest park and is now a central gathering space for the thousands of college students who walk its paths to and from class daily. Locals also enjoy Bon Secours Park's amenities, including a small playground and ample green space.
Broad and Boulevard and prime spots for dining and shopping
Shoppers grab groceries at the recently built Whole Foods or Aldi near Boulevard. There are also plenty of small shops and local businesses along West Broad Street, as well as Lowe's. Locals pick up prescriptions and essentials at CVS or head a mile south to the plentiful shops of Carytown. Options abound when locals are hungry. Families enjoy Italian cuisine at Gersi on North Davis Street. This small eatery serves spaghetti al limon and veal meatballs alongside an extensive wine list. For a casual diner-style meal, locals head to City Diner on West Broad Street for large platters of American breakfast fare. Locals also enjoy the tacos at En Su Boca, happy hour sushi specials at Fighting Fish or the hefty Thai portions at Sabai.
Bowling at River City Roll and movies at Movieland
This part of town is full of entertainment options within a few blocks. Locals catch a movie at Movieland or head to River City Roll for drinks, snacks and bowling. Sports fanatics enjoy a Flying Squirrels baseball game at The Diamond. The family-friendly venue features several food and drink vendors and hosts weekly fireworks shows visible across the neighborhood. Music lovers walk across Broad Street to The Broadberry to see a concert.
Navigating Richmond and VCU
"It's really a super convenient area for VCU employees and for students. You're just a hop, skip and a jump from campus." Midtown Richmond's proximity to Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), which enrolls over 20,000 undergraduate students annually, has greatly influenced the area's revitalization. Locals commonly walk or bike to get around, but public transportation is within reach. The GRTC Transit System shuttles across Richmond, stopping at many points along Broad Street. The Science Museum bus stop is one of the closest spots to access the bus. Many locals also travel via car. While Broad Street connects Richmond's west and east ends, it can quickly get clogged up. So locals often hop on Interstate 95, accessible a mile north on Arthur Ashe. The VCU Medical Center is 3 miles away when locals need to see a doctor. The Richmond International Airport is about 14 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
