The Museum District blends historic charm with a close-knit feel

The Museum District takes its name from the cultural institutions at its center, giving the neighborhood a creative energy. Home to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, the community is known for its early 1900s architecture, walkable streets and proximity to Carytown shopping. Much of the area was developed between 1895 and 1940, and the early 20th-century rowhouses with large front porches and original details still define its residential streets. While quieter than The Fan, which lies just east, the neighborhood shares a similar architectural style and sits within easy reach of shopping and dining. Local businesses where employees know you by name add appeal to the Museum District and are part of what makes it one of Richmond's most sought-after neighborhoods.

Historic row houses with period details and varied price points

Brick row houses line the streets of The Museum District, many featuring covered front porches, hardwood floors, fireplaces and period millwork from the early 20th century. You’ll also see storybook Tudors and Victorian-inspired homes complete with arched doorways and stained glass. “The Museum District has a lot of character,” says Karen Stephens, Associate Broker with Long & Foster Real Estate and Richmond native. “Every home has something that makes it special, and folks are close to a lot of the city’s attractions.” While most of the market is single-family, Kensington and Hanover avenues add one and two-bedroom condos to the mix. Stand-alone houses typically feature detached garages behind the home, along with small fenced-in back yards dotted with mature trees. Prices for single-family homes typically start in the low $400,000s and reach around $2 million, with costs increasing alongside square footage and interior conditions. Condos range from the low $200,000s to the low $400,000s. With a median price of roughly $600,000, the neighborhood tends to be pricier than Carytown, which has a $590,000 median, but more affordable than the Fan, which has a median of $650,000.
