A mix of apartments and single-family homes in Arden-Arcade

About 8 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento in the unincorporated community of Arden-Arcade, suburban Marconi South has single-family homes to the east, midcentury condos to the north, apartments to the west. Commercial areas around the neighborhood's edges include grocery stores, halal markets and national chain retailers. There are many nearby afghani restaurants, and the closest Islamic house of worship, Masjid Ar-Rahman, is about 2 miles south. “There does seem to be a lot of revitalization in the last few years,” says Amber Elliot, owner of Elliot’s Natural Foods. “We’re seeing a lot of new businesses pop up, plus some housing developments in the surrounding areas, instead of just shopping. It’s bringing in more residents.” Residential streets generally lack sidewalks, but major roads like Fulton Avenue have bike lanes. The private Del Paso Country Club is just north, and several public parks are within a mile or two.

Ranch-style homes on large lots

Single-family homes are found on Marconi South’s east side, within pocket subdivisions; most homes are either midcentury ranch-style or new traditional Craftsman-style from the 2010s. Lots tend to be large, ranging from a quarter acre to one-third of an acre, and many homes have private swimming pools. Front yards are typically flat and grassy, dotted with a few maple or cypress trees. The neighborhood's popular with investors looking to either rent out or flip their homes, so prices largely depend on how well a property has been maintained. Well-maintained or recently renovated homes range from $400,000 to $850,000, while fixer-uppers generally range from $300,000 to $400,000. On the neighborhood's north end, a few gated condo complexes from the 1950s have two-bedroom units that range from $200,000 to $300,000; pricing depends on size, with units ranging from 700 to 950 square feet.

Winston Churchill Middle is rated A-minus and offers extracurriculars like the Science Olympiad Team, which has advanced to nationals 11 times in the last 30 years. The A-plus-rated Mira Loma High School offers an International Studies Program, which encourages enrollees to actively engage in global issues; for the program's senior-year final project, students pick a controversial issue, write a persuasive essay, and create a rally poster as a call to action.

Sacramento Regional Transit bus stops along major roads

Interstate 80 is about a mile away, and leads about 8 miles to downtown Sacramento. Several Sacramento Regional Transit bus routes stop around the neighborhood’s edges, connecting residents with the greater Sacramento area. Narrow bike lines line major roads like Fulton Avenue, and many area retailers are within a few blocks of homes. Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Medical Center is about a mile south. Nearby Airports include Sacramento McClellan Airport, about 4 miles north, and Sacramento International Airport, about 19 miles away.

Bordered by the Del Paso Country Club

There aren’t many green spaces within the neighborhood, but there are several parks in the surrounding area. About a mile northwest, Bohemian Park features tennis and basketball courts shaded by large pine and sycamore trees; park visitors can also catch shade under the large gazebo beside a kid’s playground. To the south, Cottage Park has a public pool where locals can spend hot summer days, as well as both small and large playgrounds. The Del Paso Country Club is just north of Marconi South and is known for its members-only 18-hole golf course, which dates to 1922.

Big box retailers and specialty grocery stores around the neighborhood’s edges

Along Fulton Avenue on the neighborhood’s west side, major retailers like CVS and Walmart Neighborhood Market can be found, as well as a few car dealerships and halal grocers like Tolo Market. The locally owned FlapJacks diner, set next to El Camino Baptist Church, is known for its waffles, burgers and shakes. A small shopping plaza in the neighborhood’s southeast corner includes Elliott’s Natural Foods, a family-owned business since 1952 that sells vitamins, organic produce and other health food. Dubplate Kitchen & Jamaican Cuisine is a local favorite for their jerk chicken and plantains.

The Town & Country Village shopping center, just northwest, has more chain grocery options like Trader Joe's and Sprouts Farmers Market, as well as discount retailers like Ross and TJ Maxx. Next to the shopping center, there's the Arcade Library and the post office. Several Afghani markets and restaurants surround Marconi South, including Afghan Super Market & Homegoods, as well as Asia Market and Restaurant. "It's really uniquely diverse here," Elliott says. "we have really good food, including every kind of ethnic cuisine and interesting shopping."
