Beaver Lake Heights
Modest homes popular among first-time buyers
The housing scene in Beaver Lake Heights is comprised of modest bungalows, Cape Cods and brick ranch-style homes, and most were built between the 1920s and 1950s. Most houses have detached garages in the rear of the property, while some rely on street parking. Homes sit close together on 5,000 to 8,000-square-foot lots, and range from $120,000 to $360,000, with prices increasing alongside square footage and with recent interior upgrades. “Homes in the Greater East side tend to be on the more affordable side of the Saint Paul Market, which makes it popular among first-time buyers,” says McCracken.Career pathways and real-world learning at Hazel Park and Johnson
Hazel Park Preparatory Academy earns a C grade from Niche and serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Hazel Park is an International Baccalaureate World School, with curriculum focused on connecting schoolwork to the real world. Johnson Senior High School is a STEM magnet school with a focus on aerospace and engineering. With a B-minus rating, the school offers four specialized career pathways, including Health Sciences, Innovative Technologies, Business and Communication and Education and Community Justice. Johnson High also has over 50 clubs and extracurricular organizations.Lake access, events and nearby sports facilities
The neighborhood’s namesake 83-acre lake lies just north of the community. “Lake access is one of the biggest benefits of living in Beaver Lake Heights,” McCracken says. “You don’t get that in neighborhoods closer to downtown.” Beaver Lake Park is home to lakeside walking trails, a playground, picnic tables and a dock where anglers can reel in largemouth bass and bluegill. Tennis courts, baseball fields and an indoor gymnasium can be found just west at the Hazel Park Recreation Center. Around 4 miles northwest, Phalen Regional Park is one of the largest parks in Saint Paul, spanning nearly 500 acres. The park is home to an 18-hole public golf course, botanical gardens, a lakeside beach, picnic tables and roughly 3 miles of walking trails that wind around Phalen Lake. Phalen Regional Park also offers boat rentals and has fishing piers where visitors can reel in bluegill and northern pike. Phalen Lake also hosts the annual Dragon Festival, complete with boat racing and Asian-Pacific cuisine.Local dining in Beaver Lake Heights
Just south of Beaver Lake Heights, Minnehaha Avenue is home to a handful of local businesses. Sandwiches, burgers and chicken wings are on the menu at 5-8 Tavern & Grill, a local chain that started as a speakeasy in the 1920s and is known for their cheese-filled burger patties. The Little Oven serves classic Italian cuisine and American pub fare, with a popular brunch menu. Nearby, El Pollo Felix offers grilled chicken and barbecue dishes, while Hoagies Bar has tap brews and cocktails. A short drive south on Ruth Street can take shoppers to the nearby Cub Foods, ALDI or Target.Thoroughfares to Saint Paul and Minneapolis
Stillwater Avenue winds through the neighborhood’s north side, with Metro Transit bus stops providing service to Downtown Saint Paul and Southeast Minneapolis. Interstate 94 is a short drive south and can take drivers 5 miles west to Saint Paul or 80 miles east to Eau Claire.
