The housing scene in Beaver Lake Heights is comprised of modest bungalows, Cape Cods and brick ranch-style homes, and most were built between the 1920s and 1950s. Most houses have detached garages in the rear of the property, while some rely on street parking. Homes sit close together on 5,000 to 8,000-square-foot lots, and range from $120,000 to $360,000, with prices increasing alongside square footage and with recent interior upgrades. “Homes in the Greater East side tend to be on the more affordable side of the Saint Paul Market, which makes it popular among first-time buyers,” says McCracken.

Career pathways and real-world learning at Hazel Park and Johnson
Hazel Park Preparatory Academy earns a C grade from Niche and serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Hazel Park is an International Baccalaureate World School, with curriculum focused on connecting schoolwork to the real world. Johnson Senior High School is a STEM magnet school with a focus on aerospace and engineering. The neighborhood’s namesake 83-acre lake lies just north of the community. “Lake access is one of the biggest benefits of living in Beaver Lake Heights,” McCracken says. “You don’t get that in neighborhoods closer to downtown.” Beaver Lake Park is home to lakeside walking trails, a playground, picnic tables and a dock where anglers can reel in largemouth bass and bluegill. Tennis courts, baseball fields and an indoor gymnasium can be found just west at the Hazel Park Recreation Center. Around 4 miles northwest, Phalen Regional Park is one of the largest parks in Saint Paul, spanning nearly 500 acres. The park is home to an 18-hole public golf course, botanical gardens, a lakeside beach, picnic tables and roughly 3 miles of walking trails that wind around Phalen Lake. Phalen Regional Park also offers boat rentals and has fishing piers where visitors can reel in bluegill and northern pike. Phalen Lake also hosts the annual Dragon Festival, complete with boat racing and Asian-Pacific cuisine.
