Summit-University
From Craftsman-style homes to Victorian mansions
Housing in the neighborhood varies. Colorful Craftsman and Cape Cod-style houses sit closely together, punctuated by the occasional tree or shrub. Houses have modest yard spaces and sidewalks, which residents frequently use to get around. Towering maple trees shade brownstones and multi-family housing on the neighborhood's east side. The streets are wider, allowing for street parking. "It's essential to residents that they know the history of their homes because they're living in a historic area," Wiegele explains. "Each house is so unique and has a story behind it." Pricing ranges from $225,000 to $ 1.5 million, depending on the size and location.Studying at Central High School
Children can begin their studies at Maxfield Elementary School, with its teacher-student ratio of 11:1, and a Niche rating of C. Students can then continue at Capitol Hill Magnet School and Central School, earning B and A grades, respectively. Central High School, ranked as one of Minnesota's best Public High Schools, offers academic programs such as AVID, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. Parents also can opt to send their kids to St. Paul Academy and Summit School for private education.Shopping & dining on Shelby Avenue and University Avenue
The dining scene at Summit is arguably one of its best features. Wiegele describes it as "having a million options" making it "hard to choose where to go." Bars, cafes and restaurants line Shelby Avenue, featuring everything from Italian to Cambodian cuisine. After hours, residents head to places such as Moscow on the Hill to enjoy happy hour drinks and appetizers. For a hearty Southern meal, Wiegele recommends Revival: "It's right off Shelby Avenue and has the most amazing fried chicken. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!" More international options are available at University Avenue, such as Peking Garden and Wonders Ice Cream & Boba. Residents shop at the Mississippi Market Natural Foods Co-op, located at the center of the neighborhood, or head up north to Asian stores such as Sun Foods and Shuang Hur Supermarket for groceries.Parks with instruments and public art
Several parks are scattered throughout the neighborhood, and one of the most popular is Boyd Park. Despite being smaller in size, Boyd is a hot spot due to its location in the city. Families stop by to admire sculptures and murals or to sit under the shade at the picnic tables. Besides the playground, other interactive play structures include a scavenger hunt and musical instruments. The Western Statue Park is another highlight, offering exactly what the name suggests: a mix of life-size to giant sculptures.Enjoying the day at Jazz Fest
The Summit-University Planning Council (SUPC) issues a regular newsletter, spotlighting everything from restaurant reviews to important elections. The website also has a Community Calendar, informing residents of when and where events occur. One of these events is the Saint Paul Art Crawl, featuring more than 40 galleries and 350 artists. Summit's most notable event is the Shelby Avenue Jazz Fest, which started off as a 600-person block party. Nowadays, the festival attracts thousands of attendees, entertaining people with live music acts and food trucks. Because residents are essentially a stone's throw away from Downtown Saint Paul, they also enjoy access to events held in the city. Wiegele: "You get to be close to places like Xcel Energy Center, museums and cathedrals."Traveling with I-35
Summit-University has two highways within its vicinity: Interstate 94 and 35. Residents can take Interstate 94 to Minneapolis, about an 8-mile drive away. The Metro Transit bus and rail system is available as a public transportation option. To get to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, residents take I-35, about 10 miles away.
