A slower-paced upscale oasis next to the San Francisco Bay
Tucked away in a quiet residential enclave bordered by the infamous Presidio and San Francisco Bay, Lake Street is an upscale community where a slower pace of living finds its stride within the heart of urban sprawl. “There are a lot of families that live here,” says Peyton Stiewe, a local realtor for over 20 years and co-broker of the Peyton+Bennings boutique real estate group. “They want to be in the city so they won’t go out to the suburbs, but they also still want a quieter area, so this neighborhood gives them that.” Although close to downtown, Lake Street is a pedestrian’s haven with numerous quaint neighborhood cafes, fresh markets and cool local boutiques all within walking distance. “Since Covid, Lake Street became one of San Francisco’s implemented Slow Streets, so it’s now blocked off from traffic and you can walk through it,” Peyton says. “It’s also one of the few areas that are flat, so it’s very bikeable too. If you want to bike over from here to the Golden Gate Bridge, you can do that easily.”

Quiet residential dwellings with Victorian and Edwardian stylings
Lake Street features a blend of condos and single-family homes situated on wide, quiet residential streets backing up to the Presidio, adding to the area’s market appeal. Classic San Francisco Saratoga Bay laurels line along actual Lake Street itself, while a few small clusters of Victorian box, magnolia and red-flowering gum trees on adjacent streets help enhance the neighborhood's beautiful residential curb appeal. The most common architectural styles are Edwardian and Victorian, mixed in with a few new modern condominium buildings. One-bedroom condos can start in the $700,000s and go up to $2.3 million for three-bedroom condos. Single-family homes range from $1.7 million to $6.3 million, with the higher range being stately, newly-updated homes with five to six bedrooms.

Surrounded by quaint eateries and local boutiques
Local boutiques, cafes and specialty restaurants surround the Lake Street neighborhood. The charming California-inspired Turkish spot, Lokma, is a community favorite, serving Mediterranean food offerings such as lamb meatballs, pita bread with honey and cream and a traditional Turkish breakfast. Pizzetta 211 is another neighborhood staple, offering a weekly rotating menu of unique specialty pizzas in a cozy, four-table-only space. “Pizzetta 211 is super small, but it’s the best thin-crust pizza in the city,” Stiewie says. “It’s farm to table, so they are always working with seasonal vegetables, which is very cool.” Residents head to the area’s hidden gem, Bread Belly, for specialty coffee and pastries inspired by Asian flavors. Favorite menu items here include Kaya Toast with pandan cream and black sesame cappuccino. When looking for grocery items, locals can find basic essentials at the small New California Food Market. However, a few blocks south on Clement Street, the 25th and Clement Produce Market is a more popular corner spot for fresh produce and organic food selections. Nearby Clement Street is also where residents can shop at numerous local businesses, from vintage to antique and consignment stores.

Neighborhood block parties and festive holiday spirit
The Lake Street area has a tight-knit community that enjoys neighborhood socials and seasonal gatherings. Residents meet up for events like the family-friendly Slow Lake Street Parade, where neighbors get together to walk, bike and stroll along the streets to celebrate the community's neighborhood pride. During the fall season, Lake Street is known for being one of the best residential areas for Halloween spirit, as the community gets decked out in costumes and numerous homes transform into open-house-style haunted houses. Neighborhood block parties are another social staple for residents throughout the year. But for larger-scale city events, Golden Gate Park is just minutes away for all kinds of annual food and music festivals.
Top-rated public schools with scenic athletic fields
Area public students are zoned for Alamo Elementary School and Presidio Middle School, both of which get an A-minus rating from Niche. High schoolers can attend the A-rated George Washington High School, known for its beautiful athletic fields that overlook the Golden Gate Bridge. The high school has a regional state championship-winning varsity soccer team and offers over 50 student clubs, including Women in STEM, Mindfulness and American Sign Language. For private school options, the popular Hamlin School is nearby, a Kindergarten through Grade 8 all-girls school. “That’s often why people move here because they want to be close to this private school,” Stiewie shares.
Community parks and coastline splendor at the Presidio
On the shore of Mountain Lake, behind the neighborhood’s residential streets, Mountain Lake Park is the most prominent community park within Lake Street. Surrounded by mature Evergreen trees, the site features tennis and basketball courts, an ample green space for dogs to roam around and a newly renovated children’s playground. This sand-floored playground has sectioned, multi-level structures with a concrete slide, swings and an observation platform for kids to admire the site’s forested surroundings. Less than a mile walk from Lake Street, residents can experience an abundance of wooded walking and cycling trails along with scenic California Bay coastline views at the infamous Presidio of San Francisco. Covering 1,500 acres, this signature city park, built in 1895, is home to the 18-hole Presidio Golf Course and the area’s favorite beaches like Baker Beach. Residents stop by to swim and sunbathe while enjoying the beach’s beautiful horizon views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Along with being a highly walkable and bikeable area, Lake Street is near multiple Muni Bus stops, with the closest one at 25th Avenue and California. When driving to other major parts of San Francisco, Lake Street provides a convenient starting point. “One of the key aspects of Lake Street is that it’s a great spot to commute to downtown and the Peninsula or the Marina,” Stiewie says. It’s situated just west of Park Presidio Boulevard/Route 1, which is a major thoroughfare connecting directly through the Presidio of San Francisco to the north and the Golden Gate Park to the south.
