Historic hillside district in downtown San Francisco
One of San Francisco’s historic downtown districts, Nob Hill combines old-fashioned opulence with contemporary comforts. Its streets are a dense patchwork of regal, century-old hotels, glass-walled condos and Queen Anne-style buildings with rich, Art Deco finishes. Residents exit their posh living quarters and step out into a bustling, hillside community dotted with extravagant architecture, lively cocktail bars and upscale eateries.
“When people think about Nob Hill, they usually think about the tourism and the hotels, but we have quite the community here,” says Realtor Stephen Gomez of Compass’ Nob Hill office, who has lived in the neighborhood since the 1970s and is a member of the Nob Hill Association. “There are lots of little restaurants, convenient neighborhood markets and local events throughout the year. We’ve also got that San Francisco charm of the cable cars rumbling up down the streets. You don’t get that everywhere.”
Queen Anne architecture, luxury condos
Originally an enclave of luxury mansions and homes, the neighborhood was leveled by the city’s infamous 1906 earthquake, but it made a quick comeback and today remains one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the city. With a $1.1 million median home sales price, Nob Hill’s elevated perch above the Bay makes it one of the dreamiest places to live in San Francisco. The low-cost way to buy a home in Nob Hill is getting a $700,000 studio-apartment condo, while larger top-floor condos with multiple bedrooms and more spacious living spaces can reach upward of $4.5 million. “A lot of the apartments and condos have really spectacular views of the city,” says Realtor Maggie Visser of Compass Realty, who has lived and worked in San Francisco for more than two decades.

Ritzy hotels and a massive Gothic cathedral
Located atop Nob Hill is Grace Cathedral, a towering French Gothic style cathedral opened in the 1960s after more than 30 years of construction. Across from it, silver baron John C. Flood’s brownstone was the only mansion in Nob Hill to survive the 1906 disaster — and is now home to the illustrious and exclusive Pacific Union Club. The district includes several hotels featuring stylish restaurants and stunning views of the city. Inside the historic Fairmont hotel, visitors at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar can sip on tropical drinks around the bar’s stormy lagoon. The SF Masonic is a must-visit for music and stand-up comedy fans; built in 1958, this iconic, midcentury modern venue hosts a wide array of concerts and shows. Meanwhile, the historic Huntington Hotel is being remodeled and renovated by a luxury resort development company that purchased it in 2023.

Upscale eateries and local markets
Along Nob Hill’s boundaries, diverse commercial corridors like Polk Street and Hyde Street are where many residents go to shop and dine. Those seeking an upscale dining experience might try the exquisite Italian cuisine at Acquerello, while Mymy coffee shop is a local favorite for decadent brunch fare topped off with mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. Le Beau Market is a local mainstay for groceries, snacks and produce, but there’s also a Trader Joe’s in the neighborhood and a Whole Foods Market in neighboring Pacific Heights. With the city's famous streetcars regularly running through the neighborhood, residents can also make routine shopping trips to the Fisherman's Wharf near the waterfront or the exquisite Crocker Galleria mall in Union Square.

Huntington Park
The community gathers at Huntington Park, which occupies an entire city block across the street from Grace Cathedral and the Pacific-Union Club. “It’s where you see everyone out and walking their dogs. It’s one of the focal points of the neighborhood,” Gomez says. There are also smaller parks tucked away on city streets, like the popular Helen Wills Park near the busy Polk Street corridor. Indoor activities can be found at the Betty Ann Ong Recreation Center, where residents exercise, play ping pong and shoot hoops at an indoor basketball court.

Highly rated San Francisco schools
Young children can attend California’s oldest public school, Spring Valley Science Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. The school is a past winner of the California Distinguished Schools Award. Living in the San Francisco Unified School District, families can apply to send their kids to any middle or high school in the district, which is helpful for students interested in special programs and courses. For students who want to stay close, however, A-minus-rated Marina Middle School and the A-rated Galileo Academy of Science and Technology are in the neighboring Marina District.

Getting around the city
Nob Hill’s central location makes for easy commuting to local job centers in downtown San Francisco. Streetcars and buses run up and down the district’s busy thoroughfares, while BART metro stations can be found just south of the neighborhood on Powell Street. Those commuting to Silicon Valley can catch the Caltrain about 2 miles away, a regional rail line that connects San Francisco with Peninsula suburbs. Those in need of medical care have convenient access to St. Francis Memorial Hospital, a 288-bed medical center at the southwestern edge of Nob Hill.

I really enjoy San Francisco and it has a lot to offer. However, it's been gentrifying very quickly and the intense socioeconomic inequality is very present, which is very problematic to me.

Lovely urban legend with all the sounds of San Francisco. Sea lions at night and church bells and cable cars during the day. Something always going on around here.
