Five Wounds is at the heart of this San José neighborhood
Little Portugal, in East San José, celebrates the various cultures that call it home. The heart of the neighborhood is the Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, which has stood tall since 1918. “It is probably the most photographed, sketched, painted building in the city of San José,” says Davide Vieira, who has been described as the “most qualified representative of Little Portugal.” While Vieira officially moved to Little Portugal in 1971, he grew up visiting his grandparents’ home, which he now owns. Portuguese traditions and events, such as the Feast of the Holy Spirit, are still celebrated throughout the neighborhood. “Over the decades, newly arrived neighbors have contributed their own cultural additions, like the Latino low-rider car culture,” Vieira says. This blend of cultures is evident in the businesses that line the East Santa Clara/Alum Rock corridor. Students attend the San José Unified School District, which receives a B-plus from Niche.

Restaurants and stores along the East Santa Clara/Alum Rock Corridor
The blend of culture in Little Portugal is evident in the businesses in the area. “Food trucks and trailers dot the streetscape after hours with every type of Mexican, Central and South American food imaginable to complement the brick-and-mortar restaurants along the East Santa Clara and Alum Rock corridor,” Vieira says. One such restaurant is the Portuguese tapas bar Petiscos, formerly the Michelin-starred Adega. It borders the Popular Bakery with Portuguese pastries, including papo-seco, or rolls, and queijadas, a type of tart. Other eateries include the Vietnamese Yummy Trieu Chau and the Mexican El Rincon de Rita. Locals can shop at Kumar’s Island Market, Chaparral Supermarket or La Estrella Market, all within 1 mile of the neighborhood. Walmart is about a 2-mile drive, Costco is about 4 miles away and Lowe’s is approximately 5 miles away.
Locals can get dinner from food trucks that fill the corridor in the evening.

Feast of the Holy Spirit at Five Wounds
Little Portugal’s largest celebration of the year is the Feast of the Holy Spirit, or the “Festa do Divino Espírito Santo,” held at Five Wounds since the church’s first mass in 1918. A procession and a feast accompany the service. The School of Arts & Culture in the Mexican Heritage Plaza, within 1 mile of Little Portugal, hosts several events throughout the year, including Chile, Mole, Pozole, which celebrates Mexican Independence Day with salsa dancing, traditional meals and live mariachi music.
Colorful single-story homes in Little Portugal
While many homes have driveways, cars are parked along the residential streets of Little Portugal. Mature trees line several sidewalks in the neighborhood, while others have a clear view of the yards. Bushes, gardens and flowers add personality to the grassy or paved lawns, often surrounded by short fences. A rainbow of stucco single-story houses, either bungalows or ranch styles, fill the area, although some split levels are scattered throughout. “The home we live in was built in 1925,” Vieira says. “Some nearby are even older but have been lovingly restored by immigrants, first Portuguese, then Hispanic, and more recently, Asian.” A two-bedroom property can range from $675,000 to $800,000, while most three-bedrooms can cost between $850,000 and $1.1 million.

Students attend San José Unified School District
Students can start at Anne Darling Elementary School, which receives a C-minus from Niche, before attending the recently renamed Muwekma Ohlone Middle, which scores a C. They can get their diploma from San José High School, which earns a B. "You can get a good education there," Vieira says. The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and IB Career Certificate Programmes. Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School (CRSJ), rated B-minus, is a private school next to Five Wounds. "We partner with local businesses who can afford to sponsor a team of four students and pay for about half of their tuition," says Vieira, one of CRSJ's founders. Once a week, students will work a shift at one of these companies, many in Silicon Valley.
