Shady Oaks offers a quiet setting close to parks and shops

Framed by the Diablo Range to the east, the small community of Shady Oaks offers suburban living in the Coyote Valley. “It’s a really solid neighborhood, and what sets it apart is how quiet it is, which is hard to find even in the city's most expensive communities,” says Michael Sinclair, a Realtor with Kallab Real Estate and San Jose native. “A lot of the people who live there have been there for a long time." Its location along U.S. Route 101 makes Shady Oaks a commuter-friendly area, too. Outdoor recreation is abundant, from the Coyote Creek Trail to the indoor sports facilities at The Plex.

Well-kept homes come with mountain views and spacious backyards

Sidewalks line neighborhood's residential roads, which are wide enough to go for a bike ride and often lead to cul-de-sacs. New growth trees dot well-maintained front yards, keeping the horizon open for views of the rolling mountain ridgelines. Ranch and two-story contemporary-style homes built from the late 1970s through the early '80s dominate the market and often come with two-car driveways and backyards large enough for a pool or patio. “It’s a good bang for your buck here,” Sinclair says. “The houses are a good size and priced lower than in other San Jose communities like Willow Glen and Almaden.” Prices typically start around $1.2 million and cap at $1.7 million for a home with a bit more acreage.

Hiking trails, The Plex and more keep locals active

“If you’re into nature and those things, you’ll get it here,” Sinclair says. “It’s right next to a bunch of trails and parks.” The community’s namesake park on Coyote Road has a playground, basketball court and grassy areas, and it is within walking distance or a bike ride from most homes. Visitors can also access the Odette Morrow and Coyote Creek trails, both are paved for hiking and biking. The Coyote Creek Trail stretches for miles and runs into Hellyer County Park. The park, which charges a $6 parking fee, includes camping areas, a fishing lake and a dog park. The neighborhood is also home to The Plex, an indoor sports and entertainment complex, with activities ranging from soccer and ice hockey to an arcade and bounce houses. Silver Creek Valley Country Club is less than a mile away and features a private 18-hole course.

Traffic is expected but routes are easily accessible

U.S. Route 101 frames the neighborhood’s west side. The highway connects residents to Downtown San Jose, 11 miles northwest, and San Francisco, some 60 miles away in the same direction. “No matter where you live in the city, you’re going to experience traffic,” Sinclair says. “But when you live in the Bay Area, you are already accepting the fact that it will be 30 to 40 minutes to get anywhere.” State routes 82, 85 and 87 are easily accessible and support travel across the region. Valley Transit Authority also operates bus service along Silver Creek Road. Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is a couple of miles south, and the nearest commercial flights depart from San Jose Mineta International Airport, situated just outside of downtown.
