Tanglewood-El Monte
Ranch-style homes on sunny streets
“There are perfect starter homes here,” Dang says. “The price points are a little lower, and they have ample room and need minimal updates.” Midcentury ranch-style and split-level homes sit close together along Tanglewood-El Monte’s wide, sunny streets. Homes here have paved driveways and attached garages, and some have yards large enough for an ornamental tree or some shrubs. A three-bedroom fixer-upper can start at $820,000, while a four-bedroom ranch-style home can cost up to $1.3 million.Within 2 miles of the 101
The East Capitol Expressway passes through the neighborhood’s west. Interstate 680 is 2 miles northwest, and U.S. Highway 101 is 2 miles west. The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail’s Alum Rock station is a mile north, and the VTA bus makes several stops in the neighborhood. With dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks, Tanglewood-El Monte is bike- and pedestrian-friendly. The Regional Medical Center of San Jose is 3 miles northwest. The Reid-Hillview County Airport, a general aviation airport with no commercial flights, borders the neighborhood to the southwest, and San José Mineta International Airport is a 9-mile trip.Fresh fish at Rosy’s Fish City
Hot dogs are never far away in Tanglewood-El Monte; residents can take their pick between Vanessa’s Hot Dogs, whose specialty is a bacon-wrapped hot dog with jalapenos and grilled onions, and Wienerschnitzel, a fast-food chain serving hot dogs, chili and corn dogs. The family-owned Rosy’s Fish City is a local favorite and has served fresh seafood like crab cakes and grilled snapper since 1984. Grocery options include the Mi Rancho Supermarket and Foodmaxx.Home of California’s biggest skate park
The 200-acre Lake Cunningham Regional Park includes a 50-acre manmade lake where people can boat and fish; walking trails and abundant green space surround the lake. “Lake Cunningham is like our version of Central Park,” Dang says. “There’s ducks in the summer and people camp there and barbecue.” The park is also where residents can find Raging Waters San Jose, a 23-acre water theme park, and Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park, the biggest skate park in California.Sports at Mt. Pleasant High
Local kids can start at Thomas P. Ryan Elementary, which earns a C from Niche, then attend the C-plus-rated Ocala Middle. At the B-plus-rated Mt. Pleasant High, students can play sports like water polo, volleyball and golf; they can also get involved in several clubs, like the animation and journalism clubs. The Adelante Dual Language Academy earns a C-plus and is a kindergarten through Grade 8 charter school offering English and Spanish instruction.Christmas lights at Lake Cunningham Park
The Blinky’s Illuminated Holiday event covers Lake Cunningham Park in Christmas lights each year as part of San Jose’s Christmas in the Park celebration. This drive-through light show includes over 200,000 themed light displays with tunnels, giant trees and snowflake arches. The Reid-Hillview County Airport’s lead contamination
Airborne lead from the Reid-Hillview County Airport has caused children who live within a half mile to have elevated levels of lead in their blood. Leaded fuel is now banned at the airport, lessening the risk of lead contamination. The airport is scheduled to close in 2031, but until then, residents may experience airport noise. While Tanglewood-El Monte is at low risk for wildfires, nearby mountain areas are at high risk; residents might experience reduced air quality during active wildfires. The last severe fire season was in 2020 when almost 400,000 acres burned in the Diablo Range over 46 days.
