Defined by a colorful collection of historic architecture that decorates its quiet streets and anchored by an equally historic green space, Parkside is an established Midtown Savannah neighborhood that exudes Southern charm. It is a microcosm of the city, a charming, historic place full of character. Residents can stroll through the verdant surroundings, highlighted by canopies of Spanish moss-covered trees, and take advantage of the popular, picturesque Daffin Park, designed by one of America’s foremost urban planners at the turn of the 20th century. “Parkside is one of the most trendy, sought-after neighborhoods in Savannah,” says Edward Barr, a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal and neighborhood resident. “We’re a close-knit neighborhood. We all know each other and help each other out. Parkside is the quintessential Savannah neighborhood. I am honored to live here and sell here.”

Bungalow-style homes highlight the architectural diversity
Craftsman-influenced bungalow-style homes with welcoming porches are prominent among the neighborhood’s array of architecturally distinct housing. They are joined by American Foursquares and Cape Cods, each featuring iconic dormers; cozy minimal traditional homes; and mid-sized ranch-style homes. And every once in a while, a new home is built. Prices typically range from the low 300,000s to the mid-800,000s. The average home value is a little more than $410,000. While that is more than surrounding neighborhoods developed after World War II, it is less than other Midtown communities with historic homes. “Parkside is still affordable compared to similar neighborhoods nearby,” says Barr.
Established park is the center of activity
Daffin Park, which was completed in 1909, was the brainchild of John Nolen, who helped found what is now the American Planning Association. The park takes up the entire north side of the neighborhood. It is designed around an oak tree-lined mall with elements such as a fountain-anchored pond and multiple green spaces radiating outward. The main attraction, however, is Grayson Stadium, a fixture of the park since its construction in 1941 and now home of the Savannah Bananas. Described by Barr as “the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball,” the Bananas are a nationally known barnstorming team that has been entertaining crowds at the stadium since their inaugural season in 2016. Over the years, a dog park has been added, and residents have access to a swimming pool, tennis courts and a football field that is often busy with pee wee league football competition. The park also hosts regular events, including charity runs and rugby tournaments. “The park, like the neighborhood itself, is very active,” says Barr.
Nearby high school offers a top-rated arts education
Nearby options for the neighborhood’s youngest students include Jacob G. Smith Elementary, a B-plus-rated school by Niche, and Juliette Low Elementary. Older students can attend Myers Middle School, rated C-minus, and Savannah Arts Academy, an A-plus-rated magnet high school located less than a mile away. Jenkins High, a B-plus-rated school in the neighboring Daffin Heights area, is a traditional public institution serving students in ninth through 12th grades.
Proximity to retail stores and the trendy eateries of Starland Yard
A buzzy concentration of retail stores is located a half-mile from the neighborhood. Target, Home Depot and Whole Foods are part of a commercial center anchored by the Victory Square shopping mall. Nearby dining options are one amenity that Parkside doesn’t offer in abundance. However, less than 2 miles away is the Starland District, the epicenter of the city’s culinary resurgence. “The gourmet wave has hit Savannah,” says Barr. The centerpiece of the district is Starland Yard. “It’s funky and trendy, basically a food truck park,” says Barr. “There’s an outdoor bar and yard games. It’s just a fun place to go.” The district’s collection of eateries also includes the popular Two Tides Brewing Co. “Everybody goes there,” says Barr.
Victory Drive provides access to points throughout the city
Running alongside Daffin Park and forming the neighborhood’s northern edge, Victory Drive connects directly to the Truman Parkway about a mile east of the neighborhood. The parkway is one of the city’s primary thoroughfares. It can be taken north to the nearby riverfront adjacent to downtown and west through the city. Victory Drive also connects to the Islands Expressway, providing convenient access to the beach on Tybee Island and other points between the neighborhood and the Atlantic Ocean. For residents who want or need public transportation, several Chatham Area Transit bus stops can be found along Waters Ave on the eastern edge of the neighborhood.
