Recreation-surrounded neighborhood in East Spokane
Originally developed in the 1890s around a mineral spring that was first used by a spa and later a brewery, Minnehaha has changed a lot over the past 130 years. Today, the East Spokane neighborhood, which runs along the north bank of the Spokane River, is mostly residential, except for a small patch of commercial real estate along Upriver Road. These days, the neighborhood is best known for its proximity to some of the most popular recreation areas in Spokane, including the Centennial Trail, Minnehaha Rocks and Beacon Hill. “The neighborhood has so many different types of recreation nearby,” says Mike Bass, managing broker of Century 21 Beutler & Associates and lifelong Spokane resident. “It's perfect if you want to enjoy a bunch of different activities.”
Midcentury homes next to leafy hills
The neighborhood’s residential streets are lined with ranch-style homes, bungalows and split-levels. The neighborhood was first platted at the turn of the 20th century, and houses in the neighborhood feature more spacious yards than those found in Central Spokane, with lots up to a quarter acre in size. Most of the homes standing in Minnehaha today were built in the early-to-mid-20th century and range from $250,000 to $450,000. The hills along the eastern edge of the neighborhood are covered in Douglas firs and Ponderosa pines, giving the whole neighborhood a woodsy feel.
Minnehaha Rocks and Beacon Hill
The neighborhood is best known for its ample recreational opportunities. “You can enjoy golfing, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking,” says Mindy Muglia, Broker Partner for Five Star Spokane Realty. “You can swim or kayak on the Spokane River. You can kind of do it all." 39-acre Minnehaha Park connects to Beacon Hill, a popular hiking and mountain biking spot with dramatic city views. There are dozens of climbing and bouldering routes at Minnehaha Rocks, including a 70-foot main wall. Road cyclists can enjoy the 40-mile Spokane River Centennial Trail, which runs from west Spokane all the way to the Idaho border and features amazing views of the river. The neighborhood is also right next to the city-operated Esmerelda Golf Course. “It’s really a great course,” says Bass. “It’s right on the edge of town, so it sort of blends into the forest. The public courses in Spokane are, pardon the pun, on par with the private courses in the area.”
Hillyard shops and nearby restaurants
While Minnehaha’s blocks are almost entirely residential, the neighborhood is less than a mile away from the shops and restaurants of Hillyard, including the neighborhood Safeway supermarket. While Minnehaha itself doesn’t have a huge dining scene, it is home to a couple of the most popular restaurants in North Spokane. Knight’s Diner offers classic American fare in a converted railcar, celebrating the area’s railroad-centered history. The highly-rated Rincon Tapatio, meanwhile, features authentic Mexican cuisine and has some of the best carne asada in town.
Rogers High offers advanced classes at SCC
Minnehaha’s public schools are overseen by the Spokane Public School District. Cooper Elementary has a B grade on Niche, while Shaw Middle School has a C grade. Rogers High School has a B-minus grade and was the filming location for many scenes of the classic 80s wrestling film Vision Quest. The school offers dual enrollment classes through nearby Spokane Community College, which is located just across the river from Minnehaha.
Cycling to work on the Centennial Trail
Roads like Freya Street and Euclid Avenue connect Minnehaha to nearby neighborhoods like Hillyard as well as Downtown Spokane. Upriver Drive, which follows the Spokane River along the southern border of the neighborhood, is part of the city’s renowned Centennial Trail—the most-used bike trail in the Inland Northwest—which allows cyclists to ride Downtown, to Spokane Valley, or all the way to Idaho. It’s a little over 3 miles from Minnehaha to the nearest Interstate 95 on-ramp. The route, which follows Greene Street and Freya Street, is popular with commuters and can get a bit crowded during rush hours.
