Rooted in community and south side pride

Community is a keyword in Southside, fittingly located on the south side of Syracuse. Pride echoes through the areas of Elmwood, Brighton, Southwest and Strathmore – all of which make up this urban neighborhood. Heritage and culture are evident through the various local and family-owned businesses along South Salina Street. "A lot of the Black leadership and the interesting African American businesses in the city are in this neighborhood," says Gregory Munno, board member of "The Stand", a Southside newspaper. “There's a tremendous amount of history and family connection and pride in people that live here." This community-based news website features articles in both English and Spanish, reflecting Southside’s growing cultural diversity. Convenience is also key in the neighborhood: On the west side is a commercial shopping district; to both the north and the south are two major hospitals; Syracuse University sits to the east, and spacious city parks are in the heart of Southside. The area also offers easy access to Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11, which run through the neighborhood.

Scenic greens and lake views at Onondaga Park

Southside residents are only a short walk from various parks and recreational spaces. Onondaga Park offers scenic green space with athletic courts and fields. The rustic stone bridge and gazebo overlooking Hiawatha Lake make for picturesque backdrops. The park also has sunken gardens to explore, a public pool, a spray pad and a 5-mile paved walking trail called the Creekwalk. “The Creekwalk actually goes all through Syracuse and downtown,” says Valerie Morris, an associate broker with Adolfi Real Estate. “It’s a fairly new feature.” Residents who live near this trail – which follows the Onondaga Creek, connecting Southside to downtown Syracuse – might be subject to flooding. In addition to downtown, the Creekwalk also connects to the 30–acre Kirk Park. This park features a covered basketball court, tennis courts, athletic fields for youth league games and the Seals Community Center. A few blocks south, Elmwood Park is a 65-acre park with athletic fields and courts, a playground and more walking trails. Golfers gather on the west side, where Bellevue Country Club offers a private 18-hole golf course and an Olympic-sized pool.

Local eats on Salina Street and South Avenue

On South Salina Street, Chi'Soul Food is a counter-service takeout spot that serves soul food classics. A few blocks up the road, The Café Sankofa Cooperative is a nonprofit that provides access to fresh food through a weekly farmers market, organizes fitness and mindfulness programs and hosts workshops to promote community health. Sankofa, which in the Twi language of Ghana means to "go back and get it," speaks to the cooperative's mission to bring along any community members who may have been left behind in the past. The organization emphasizes the importance of equitable access to a healthy lifestyle. To the north on South Avenue, Jerkhut is a popular spot for authentic Jamaican cuisine. A bit further down the avenue, Swallow’s is the local watering hole for post-dinner drinks. “A lot of people like the area because of all the small convenience stores,” Morris says. “If they don’t have a car, they can walk to the markets and restaurants.” Larger shopping excursions happen on the west side, where there’s Wegmans and the Western Lights shopping plaza.

Home variety in Strathmore, Brighton and Elmwood

Sidewalks typically run along the residential streets of Southside, where some homes have enough yard space for rain gardens and decorative trees. And because Syracuse oftentimes averages more than 100 inches of snowfall and below-freezing temperatures every winter, many homeowners invest in generators. Street parking is common, but some areas feature properties with driveways. Homes fit a wide range of budgets and lifestyles. "The housing is incredibly diverse, going from an almost suburban community in Strathmore, with some of the best housing stock you're going to see in Syracuse,” Munno says. More traditional housing styles are found in Southwest, Brighton and Elmwood. American Foursquare homes with dormers and spacious covered porches sit alongside a variety of colonial styles built in the early 1900s. Multifamily stick-style homes and investment properties in need of full renovations can cost between $20,000 and $95,000. Move-in ready single-family dwellings that offer 1,000 to 2,000 square feet of space might run from $100,000 to around $200,000. On the west side in the Strathmore section, there is a new subdivision with brand new 3-bedroom and 3-bathroom condominiums priced at $400,000.

Building Men Program at Corcoran High School

Neighborhood students can begin at Bellevue Elementary before advancing to sixth through eighth grade at Brighton Academy, both of which receive a C-minus Niche grade. Corcoran High School, graded a C-plus, offers the Building Men Program, which helps young male students develop their purposes through mentorship and community service opportunities. According to CAP Index, Southside receives a crime score of 6 out of a possible 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. But school-aged community outreach programs like these share the goal of reducing crime in the area. Private school options in the area include Most Holy Rosary School, a private Catholic kindergarten through sixth-grade school. On the same campus is the Catholic Church of the Most Holy Rosary, although Southside is home to several different religious denominations of the Christian faith.

Getting around on Interstate 81 or the Centro

Commuters can hop onto Interstate 81 or U.S. Route 11 and reach destinations north of downtown, including Oneida Lake and Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Access to these thoroughfares also makes it convenient for residents to work at or visit Syracuse University and SUNY Upstate Medical University, both located just north of Southside. The Centro Syracuse bus services the area, with several stops along South Avenue and South Salina Street.
