Westcott is a walkable and welcoming Syracuse community
Westcott residents can walk to class at Syracuse University, a show at Westcott Theater or the rose garden at Thornden Park. Bordering the university and just east of downtown Syracuse, this cozy neighborhood welcomes a diverse mix of students, university faculty and generational residents who enjoy a rich community and convenience to the city's top attractions. "People there want to be associated with the younger lifestyle. There are people in their 80s that live in the neighborhood, but they're the younger, hip 80-year-old people," says Chip Hodgkins, associate broker at Hunt Real Estate ERA. "These are people who want to be in the cultural center of Syracuse. There's the athletics, the art, the theater. People are very proud to say they're from Westcott."
Homes from the early 20th century for students and long-time residents
American Foursquares, bungalows and traditional homes built in the early 1900s line Westcott's gridded streets. Wide front porches, colorfully painted exteriors and details like fish scale-shaped shingles and arched windows make each residence stand out. Mature trees along the street offer shade and provide an established feel. Some single-family homes are used as student rentals, and a smattering of multi-family properties and condos can also be found here. "It's really considered perfect for students who want to live off campus. It's a great place to be an investor because there's a ton of rentals," Hodgkins says. Properties typically sell for between $130,000 and $450,000.
Global dining and events on Westcott Street
Restaurants, shops and community spaces line Westcott Street in the neighborhood. "It's hip, it's walkable. You can walk down the street and get a coffee, breakfast, dinner or go to a show," says Chatarina Etoll, associate broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices CNY Realty. Diners can find global flavors at restaurants like Alto Cinco, a cozy Mexican restaurant serving piled-high nachos and enchiladas, and Munjed's Middle Eastern & Greek Restaurant, serving favorites like gyros and falafel. Syracuse Cooperative Market has grocery items nearby, and big-box options like Aldi are just north. Westcott Street is also home to the Petit Branch Library, and Westcott Community Garden is a block over.
Westcott Theater is another popular spot for a night out. This circa-1919 movie theater-turned-event venue hosts a range of live music acts, from raves and tribute bands to heavy metal and country music nights. For larger events, the JMA Wireless Dome on the Syracuse University campus has a capacity of nearly 50,000 and hosts sporting events and concerts, including the Syracuse University football, basketball and lacrosse games.
Artistry on display at the Westcott Street Cultural Fair
Each September, the neighborhood celebrates its diversity and local artists at the Westcott Street Cultural Fair. Thousands of people gather to watch dancers, singers and other performers of various cultural traditions on stage. The parade along Westcott Street features more performers and artists donning colorful, handmade costumes and local sponsors promoting their brands.
Thornden Park has athletic facilities and a famous rose garden
Westcott is home to Thornden Park, one of the largest parks in the city. Spanning 76 acres of hills bordering downtown Syracuse, facilities here include a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, paved trails and a playground. The E.M. Mills Rose Garden at Thornden Park comes into full bloom at the beginning of summer. The garden's 3,000-plus rose bushes spill out of flower beds and creep up decorative archways, showcasing a spectrum of colors.
K-12 students attend the Syracuse City School District
Younger students in the neighborhood are zoned to attend the Ed Smith School, which has a C rating from Niche, for pre-K through eighth grades. They can continue to the B-rated Nottingham High School. Nottingham High offers career and technical education pathways with work-based learning in subjects like Construction Technology, Creative Expression and Design and Natural Resources. Students attending Syracuse city schools also have the opportunity to apply to specialty schools within the district, such as the C-minus-rated Seymour Dual Language Academy and B-minus-rated Syracuse Latin School.
Westcott is walkable and has public transit options
Crouse Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical University are among the medical facilities less than a mile west of the neighborhood. Downtown Syracuse and Syracuse University are within walking distance, and locals also have the option to take the bus around town. Centro, the region's bus system, services many stops in the neighborhood. Syracuse Hancock International Airport is less than 8 miles north. For traveling farther distances, drivers can take Interstate 690 across town and connect to interstates across New York.
