Traditional homes and long-standing businesses in Lansingburgh
The streets of Lansingburgh, a neighborhood in Troy, are lined with traditional homes and long-standing businesses. The neighborhood was originally its own village before being annexed by the city in 1901. In the 1800s, Troy was a major industrial hub for iron, paper and linen manufacturing. It was also home to Samuel Wilson, whose meatpacking business supplied soldiers during the War of 1812 and is believed to have become the inspiration for the country’s national symbol, Uncle Sam. Troy saw a period of decline during the 1900s before seeing new life in the present day. “It was a very industrialized city from way back; that’s part of the Troy story,” says Joseph Cardinale, a NYS Licensed Real Estate Agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who’s been selling homes in Troy for nearly 10 years. “It sort of converged from an old, industrial town in decline, to a resurgence as a great city to live in.”
Single- and multi-family homes starting in the $150,000s
The neighborhood offers a mix of single- and multi-family houses. Homes were primarily built in the early- to mid-1900s and feature traditional styles like Cape Cod, Craftsman and colonial. Properties are tightly arranged along gridded streets, though many homes have some front and backyard green space. Single- and multi-family houses tend to stay on the market for just over two weeks and typically sell for $150,000 to $350,000. “On the fringes and in knockdown areas, they’re putting up townhouses,” says Cardinale. “There’s also a mix of warehouses and schoolhouses being turned into condos.” Townhomes and condos usually go for $200,000 to $350,000.
Italian food and nostalgia at Verdile's
Locals are just a short walk or drive from popular dining spots. “Lansingburgh has some really great, old restaurants,” says Cardinale. “Verdile’s is a personal favorite of mine.” The family-owned Italian restaurant has been around since 1943 and retains a nostalgic feel. Other eateries include Hot Dog Charlie's, a local chain, and Snowman, which has been serving house-made ice cream since 1953. Hannaford sells groceries in the north end of the neighborhood and chains like Walmart and Aldi are south of Lansingburgh along Hoosick Road.
Festivals and concerts in Downtown Troy
Downtown Troy is a hotspot for events and festivals. “They have something going on there just about every weekend,” says Cardinale. In May, Riverfest celebrates local art and culture with over 100 vendors. Rockin’ on the River is a concert series that runs from June to August, and the Power Park Concert Series runs through July and August. The Troy Pig Out in August brings in professional barbecue teams from around the country to compete for a spot in the Grand American Barbecue World Championship, and eventgoers can sample what they make. The Troy Turkey Trot marathon on Thanksgiving Day has been held since 1916. Downtown streets are also transformed into a holiday celebration for the Victorian Stroll, a tradition that has taken place since 1982.
Pocket parks, bikeway connect Lansingburgh residents to nature
Throughout the neighborhood, pocket parks like the one on 112th Street offer sports facilities and playgrounds. Knickerbacker Park is a larger municipal space with baseball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, a playground and an indoor ice rink. The Troy Motorboat & Canoe Club lets boaters dock their vessels on the Hudson River. The Uncle Sam Bikeway, a 7-mile path that connects north and south Troy, runs alongside Lansingburgh. Frear Park is also just south and has a public nine-hole golf course.
Lansingburgh High offers specialized business programs
Students may start at Turnpike Elementary, which teaches kindergarten through second grade and receives a B from Niche, before going to Rensselaer Park Elementary, which teaches third to fifth grade and gets a C. Knickerbacker Middle also has a C, while Lansingburgh High earns a B and offers a business department with specialized courses in fields like accounting and marketing. Just south, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a private college and the oldest technological university in the country.
Commuting via Route 4, bus stops on Fifth Ave
Though Lansingburgh may offer walkable shops and attractions depending on where you are in the neighborhood, a car is necessary for regional travel. Commuters can take U.S. Route 4, known locally as Second Avenue, 10 miles south to get to Albany. There are also bus stops along Fifth Avenue that offer service to and from the city. Samaritan Hospital is just 4 miles south. The closest airport, Albany International, is 12 miles away.
