Home of McLennan Community College
The first junior college in Texas to incorporate the word “community” into its name was established in Cedar Ridge in 1965. Nearly 50 years later, McLennan Community College continues to give Waco residents an opportunity to learn, grow and succeed. “I take pride in knowing that we have a really solid, affordable community college,” says Joe Reed, a longtime Waco resident and Realtor with Weichert Realtors. Although the school attracts a lot of renters, many year-round residents have lived in the community for decades. Bordered by the Bosque River and flanked by Lake Waco, the heavily wooded neighborhood offers a peaceful respite from downtown Waco, a few miles away. “If you look out your back window, you’re looking at the woods,” Reed says. “It’s a beautiful, quiet area.”
McLennan Community College is recognized for its commitment to student success.
The Bosque river connects to Lake Waco, providing recreational opportunities for residents.

Growing tall at Cedar Ridge Elementary
For many students, it’s a short walk to Cedar Ridge Elementary School, conveniently ensconced within the main residential area. They’ll move to G.W. Carver Middle School for grades six through eight. Both schools get a C from Niche. Next up, Waco High School is a 10-minute drive and gets a Niche grade of B-minus. College students can obtain a skill certificate or associate degree at McLennan or take classes to build the foundation of a four-year degree. The community college offers courses and programs in various fields, including nursing, real estate, cosmetology and business management.
Students in grades K-5 may attend Cedar Ridge Elementary.
Waco High School is a part of Waco ISD.

1950s ranch-style homes with forested backyards
More than half the properties in Cedar Ridge are apartment complexes, many of which are concentrated around the college, with several condo developments along Lake Shore Drive. In the southeastern half of the neighborhood, ranch-style homes with cross-gabled roofs and attached garages sit back from the road, featuring paved walkways bordered by green swaths of lawn. Brick construction is a dominant theme, but homes painted in neutral and Easter egg shades pop up here and there. Properties typically measure between 1/4 and 1/2-acre, and mature trees shade fenced backyards. “Some of those lots go very far back into ravines,” Reed says. “It’s almost like country life in the city.” Homes in the neighborhood tend to stay on the market for a few months. A two-bedroom condo can range from $150,000 to $200,000, while a ranch-style house on a 1/4-acre lot might cost between $200,000 and $450,000.
Many homes feature large windows to take advantage of natural light.
Cedar Ridge offers a variety of architectural styles, from traditional to modern designs.

Water sports at Camp Fimfo
Camp Fimfo might be a campground, but the Bosque River resort appeals to locals as well as tourists. The whimsical name is an acronym for “Fun Is More Fun Outside.” A water playground with kiddie slides and a replica of an old-fashioned water tower attracts the younger crowd, while the main resort pool is equipped with a volleyball net, basketball hoops and a swim-up bar. An 18-hole golf course is also onsite. Day passes are usually available for residents who want to enjoy the amenities, but some blackout dates may apply. If the waterslides here seem too tame, the Hawaiian Falls Waco waterpark is across the river. Northern Gateway Park perches atop the Cameron Park bluffs, opening the door to Waco’s largest public green space. From here, visitors can enjoy the picnic pavilion and grassy sports fields at the Gateway or explore more of Cameron Park’s 416 acres.
Hawaiian Falls is a local waterpark and hotspot of the neighborhood.
Cameron Park welcomes all residents with lush landscaping.

Southern Roots brew on tap at Squirrely’s
Burrowed into a curve of the Bosque River, Squirrely’s Tavern is Camp Fimfo’s onsite watering hole. The restaurant is open to the public and offers pub grub faves like wings, mozzarella sticks, pizza and burgers. Adult diners can wash down their meals with “Fimfomaniac,” an exclusive brew crafted in collaboration with Waco’s Southern Roots Brewery. Lawn games like corn hole, horseshoes and bocce ball keep things lively around the patio, and the tavern sometimes hosts live music on weekends. Farther along Lake Shore Drive, Shipley’s Do-Nuts and Papa Bear’s (formerly Jon Lillie’s Steakhouse) are tucked within Fidelity Plaza, a small shopping center. Groceries are available at H-E-B on North 19th Street near an assortment of fast-food chain restaurants.
