NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins has agreed to become an investor and partner in an Atlanta-based real estate company.
The firm, called Roots, provides rent rebates to tenants who pay on time and take care of their properties.
The company said it has raised roughly $33 million in capital from investors nationally since it was founded in 2021. Wilkins is just the latest sports figure to enter the world of commercial real estate, a group that includes former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal.
“Roots is providing the opportunity for anyone to invest in real estate,” Wilkins said in a statement. “I love Atlanta, and as long as the wealth gap keeps widening, generations of people are getting left behind. We can change that at Roots, and I feel like this might be the best team I’ve ever played on.”
Wilkins spent most of his career with the Atlanta Hawks. The 6-foot-8 forward became known as the "Human Highlight Film" for his creative slam dunks before being inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
“Dominique is exactly the person we wanted to join us on this mission," Roots co-founder and CEO Daniel Dorfman said in a statement. "He’s an Atlanta legend and cares deeply about this city and its people."
