In the same year he oversaw construction of the Empire State Building in New York City, Paul Starrett built a large house that just went on the market in Wisconsin’s largest city.
The colonial-style home at 8315 North River Road is priced at nearly $4 million, making it the most expensive currently for sale in Milwaukee, according to Homes.com. The 8,630-square-foot property in the River Hills suburb includes the main house and a more recently constructed two-bedroom guest house, with a total of five bedrooms and nine bathrooms. A seven-car heated garage is attached to the main house. The 6.8-acre property was listed by Quinlevan & Armitage, a local real estate firm.
“The home combines 1930s charm with state-of-the-art amenities,” the firm says in its written description of the property.

Starrett was a native of the Chicago area, not far from Milwaukee, and was involved in the construction of a number of commercial and residential buildings in that region during his career. They included the 1902 Chicago Tribune building, said Rachel Freundt, who writes about the Windy City’s architecture, in an online post. In New York, he also helped erect the famed Flatiron Building and the original Penn Station.
The exterior of the River Hills house includes Lannon stone that was quarried in the past in a number of locations on Milwaukee’s outskirts, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Among the main house’s highlights are its grand foyer by the front entrance and a sunroom with heated floors. Outside, the property includes an in-ground swimming pool and spa, tennis courts and a bluestone patio with a firepit.
The estimated monthly payment on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage for this house, assuming a 20% down payment and the current interest rate, is $27,163, according to Homes.com.
