While some homebuyers love the fresh, modern experience of a newly built home, others are drawn to something more shadowy, especially during spooky season.

Picture a gothic atmosphere, perhaps with creaking floorboards, a few things that go bump in the night, or even a parlor that could hold a seance by moonlight. A home that you can picture Vincent Price describing in devilish detail.

A survey of more than 1,000 adults, conducted by mortgage company Rocket this month, found more than half of Americans would at least consider purchasing a haunted house. Of those surveyed, 23.3% said they live in a “haunted” house themselves, characterized by mysterious noises and apparitions.

However, there are dozens of homes currently on the market across the country that make no claims of being haunted, but do offer an autumnal, moody and sometimes witchy aesthetic for the discerning homebuyer. Here’s a collection of 13 homes — browse them if you dare:

A horror movie-loving homeowner swapped this home’s natural brick exterior for an all-black look, fitting for what’s found inside.

The listing photos show memorabilia from various scary movies, such as Stephen King’s “It” to the classic “The Exorcist.”

The home also includes an indoor pool and cabana, vaulted ceilings and exposed brick inside. Listing agent Joshua Mentesana calls it “the macabre mansion on the hill in Arizona’s wine country.”

Gothic Revival home reminiscent of Dracula’s Castle — on the outside

Garrison, New York

Much like Dracula’s Castle, also known as the Bran Castle in Romania, this New York home uses Gothic architecture, seen in its reaching gables and pointed, arched windows. The sun-filled interior would make this home Dracula’s nightmare, though.

Built in 1867, this home in Garrison, New York, is Gothic Revival, a second wave of Gothic architecture that became popular in the United States in the middle of the 19th century. It’s also designed by Alexander Jackson David, a leading Gothic Revival architect, for Edwards Pierrepont, a former U.S. attorney general.

It became Pierrepont’s country home, according to listing agent Heather Fitzgerald of Coldwell Banker Realty. The 10,626-square-foot home comes with 19.72 acres.

This black exterior A-frame lake house complements its orange detached three-car garage, much like a witch’s hat and a pumpkin.

The main home includes a bedroom and half bathroom with a full kitchen, outfitted with butcher block countertops, black appliances and a farmhouse sink.

The orange counterpart includes an above-garage apartment with two bedrooms, an open-concept kitchen and 825 square feet of living space. Outside space includes two decks, one with a hot tub.

The duo is located less than a mile from Lake Isabel.

Stained glass, carved woodwork and stone details look back to this townhouse’s 17th-century origins. According to listing agent Eleanora Srugo of Douglas Elliman, the home was originally built in Amsterdam before being dismantled and shipped to New York City in 1845.

That wasn’t its last resting spot. The home was again moved in 1910 and updated, but architect Frederick J. Sterner, who was known for remodeling brownstones in New York and designing new buildings in Denver, according to the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

It was last owned by fashion designer Oleg Cassini and has a storied history of lavish parties.

“There is a legend of an epic St. Patricks’ Day party from 1914, but I am sure Halloween parties were just as fun,” Srugo told Homes.com in an emailed statement.

Elizabethan estate with 165 years of stories

$5,500,000

Pawling, New York

This Elizabethan-style manor offers 43 rooms, in addition to two caretaker homes, a carriage house, greenhouse, and yoga studio on 25.5 acres.

It’s 165 years old and includes historic features such as carved woodwork and stained glass, and dramatic design choices like rounded vaulted ceilings. The grandeur of Elizabethan architecture followed the positive economic growth under Queen Elizabeth I of England, and the ornamental style of architecture reflects this.

“Elmwood Farm is one of those truly rare properties that captures both the romance of a bygone era and the potential for a new chapter,” said listing agent Harriet Norris of Douglas Elliman Real Estate in a statement to Homes.com.

Washington, D.C.

This recently remodeled Victorian rowhouse looks like the goth sister to the cheery yellow home next door. But never judge a house by its charcoal-painted exterior, because the inside includes marble finishes and a bright white walls palette with white oak details.

The four-floor home was built in 1905 and remodeled this year by Ziba Management. Listing agent Barak Sky of Serhant told Homes.com in a statement that the listing offers “a Kalorama lifestyle at a more approachable price point and twice the space of nearby Dupont or Kalorama homes at roughly $1 million less.”

It’s topped with a private rooftop deck with city views, a lounge and a wet bar.

$2,099,700

Tampa, Florida

Touches of masonry on this gray home’s exterior, plus bay windows with black frames gives this modern Florida home a touch of Gothic Revival.

It was built in 2025 by Vikin Homes and featured on HGTV’s “100 Day Dream Home,” which builder and listing agent Shane O’Neil of Madison Heights Realty Group describes as “moody historic charm with modern craftsmanship.”

The home includes a two-tone kitchen with hints of natural wood and sleek black countertops and cabinetry, plus a walk-in pantry behind it with a beverage fridge. Throughout the home, black built-ins and gray walls continue the dark-tone appeal.

Each of the five bathrooms have a connected bathroom and walk-in closet all spread across three levels.

Brick mansion next to Sleepy Hollow Lake

$1,199,000

Athens, New York

Past Sleepy Hollow Lake and down a long, tree-lined driveway sits a lone brick mansion that listing agent Richard Vizzini of Corcoran Country Living calls “Farview.”

But there’s no connection to Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” or the 1999 Tim Burton film adaptation — so there’s little risk of seeing the Headless Horseman. Instead, homeowners gain membership to the recreational amenities of the 2.5-mile lake, including the tennis and pickleball courts and clubhouse. It’s also positioned less than a mile from the Hudson River.

Architect Andrew Jackson Downing designed the 1895-built home. Downing is known for his landscape architecture and designed homes to be harmonious with nature, according to The Art Institute of Chicago.

The home has exposed brick throughout the interior with wide plank floors, ceiling beams, a wood stove and country-style kitchen. Original woodwork and moldings can be found inside, and outside, there’s a heart-shaped stone garden. It comes with 3.24 acres.

Black Mountain, North Carolina

Perched atop the Black Mountain range outside Asheville, North Carolina, this 2006-built home offers a miles-long view of fall-colored leaves.

Although built in the 2000s, the mountain home incorporates elements of Gothic Revival and storybook Tudor architecture. Stained glass and arched windows are balanced by a fish scale shingle roof and stone exterior.

It has 5,934 square feet of living space. Insulation, new appliances, refreshed library room, new light fixtures a deck extension and more were part of a recent remodel.

The main level houses the primary suite, which includes a hand-carved marble soaking tub depicting a winged lion.

Chicago, Illinois

This 1926-built home in Chicago features castle-like watchtower section with battlement spaces while the exterior brickwork is laid in a diamond pattern. It was designed by architect Edward G. McClellan and has been owned by the same homeowner for 20 years.

The home was updated last year but retains original details like the built-in cabinetry, molding, wainscoting, floors and some tile. The third floor was used as the maid’s quarters, where there remains an original bench seating.

The home previously was used as multifamily, with three units, which listing agent John Wright of Keller Williams Premiere Properties suggests using as a multi-generational household or as a house hacking opportunity: living in a unit while renting the others.

The property includes a converted barn-turned-garage and a 1,800-square-foot workshop building.
