SUMMERS IN THE SOUTH AT “THE GLEN”…The smell of sweet honeysuckle, the sound of children laughing, and the glow of fireflies light up the air on Micasa Dr. Imagine it, Circa 1835, Dr. Gibbes Kisses his wife and kids as he heads out on his short journey to Farmer’s Hall where he ran the town clinic as a physician and dentist. By 1845, Dr. Gibbes, cousin to Lewis Gibbes of Ashtabula, sold “The Glen” to Samuel Maxwell, grandson to Robert Anderson of which Anderson County gained its namesake. Mr. Maxwell, who served as a town councilman, was vital in the petition to renew Pendleton’s charter of incorporation in 1853. In August of 1859, Samuel Maxwell lovingly passed the torch of “The Glen” to his only daughter, Sue Conyers as her wedding gift upon the nuptials to Dr. Thomas J. Pickens, great-grandson of General Andrew Pickens who commanded over Sue’s great grandfather, Colonel Robert Anderson. The wedding of Dr. Pickens to Sue Conyers was the event of the season with the who’s who of Pendleton in attendance. The tales of fancy balls and festivities are documented by a letter of gossip written by John C. Calhoun’s wife, Floride to her daughter that is proudly displayed in the center hall of the home. Dr. Pickens also kindly served his townspeople as the community physician often bartering his services with Hunter’s Store. Dr. Pickens resided in “The Glen” until his death in 1917 at the age of 80. Over the next hundred years, “The Glen” has been occupied by 5 prominent families, and now, for the first time in 25 years, this show-stopping home is available for sale.
