Bob grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia, as the 11th of 12 children. He graduated from Waynesboro High School and received an Associate Business Degree from Blue Ridge Community College, working at Barksdale Furniture to put himself through school. He moved to Charlottesville in 1982, where he started as host in one of the restaurants at Farmington Country Club. He moved up to Manager and then Catering Manager after a brief stint at the Commonwealth Club in Richmond. He started in real estate in 1989.
