The Virginia Museum of History and Culture and The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum District gets its name from The Virginia Museum of History and Culture, where the Commonwealth’s heritage is researched, studied and showcased, and The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, whose outdoor lawn is just as popular as the artwork inside. “Rumors of War,” a bronze sculpture by artist Kehinde Wiley, guards the VMFA. Portraying a young Black man on horseback, the statue responds to Richmond’s history and the Confederate tributes that lined Monument Avenue until 2022. “Chloe” sits in the garden. This large sculptural head by artist Jaume Plensa is an optical wonder that, although relatively flat, changes depending on the viewer’s angle. “The art outside the museum draws visitors inside,” Stephens explains. Entering the large glass doors, visitors will find vast displays of art and artifacts from various cultures, including American, British and African, as well as visiting exhibits that change throughout the year.

Walking distance to restaurants and shops
“People love The Museum District for its walkability,” Stephens says. “And, of course, it’s great because there are actually things to walk to.” In the mornings, locals open their doors and head to corner coffee shops like Black Hand or Blanchard’s. Twenty- and thirty-somethings spend weekend nights at Buddy’s Place, Bandito’s Burrito Lounge or Sheppard Street Tavern, while families hang out at the Belmont Library during the day. Museum District residents are just steps away from the shops and restaurants in Carytown, which, lined with unique local stores, is a great place to spend an afternoon window shopping. Here, residents can get groceries at Kroger and Publix, as well as Richmond staple, Ellwood Thompson’s. “Ellwood Thompson’s ships some things, but there’s an emphasis on integrating the local farmer with the shopper,” Stephens says. “A lot of their produce comes from local farms, and the store emphasizes being your best, healthiest self.” Residents can also walk or ride their bikes to the bars and breweries in nearby Scott’s Addition or The Fan, two of Richmond’s most notable neighborhoods.

Historic rowhomes and detached single-family homes
Eclectic rowhomes line The Museum District’s streets. Residents chat on balconies and porches on warm evenings. Cars are parked on the curb or in hidden alleyway lots. Mature trees dot sidewalks, shading dog walkers, and flowerboxes hang from windows. Some homes have small backyards, typically fenced in and shaded by awnings. But no two properties look the same in The Museum District, with styles ranging from Tudor Revival to Federal to Italianate. Potential homebuyers can find a rowhome for between $500,000 and $1.25 million. There are also some detached single-family homes, typically selling for around $700,000 to $2 million. On Stuart Avenue, new condos are coming in what was once an all-girls Catholic school. Their name – The Abbey – alludes to the building’s history and preserved stained-glass chapel. Annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest and weekly VMFA events
The annual St. Benedict Oktoberfest dominates The Museum District for three days, with covered tents lining the streets and beer tickets stuck to the pavement. Festivalgoers clink steins, listen to live music and eat authentic German food. While this beloved occasion occurs only once a year, the VMFA hosts weekly events for residents to enjoy. On Wednesdays, the Dominion Energy Jazz Café fills the museum with music from local performers. At After 5 Fridays, things stay open late. Richmond City Schools and private options
Students are zoned for Richmond City Schools. They can attend Mary Munford Elementary School, which gets a B-plus from Niche, and Albert Hill Middle School, which gets a B. They can finish their public education at Thomas Jefferson High School, earning a B from Niche and offering an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. Also in the neighborhood are two Catholic Schools – St. Benedict’s, serving prekindergarten to eighth grade students, and Cristo Rey, a high school.

Bordering the neighborhood, U.S. Interstate 195 cuts commutes into the city. And when it’s time to fly, the Richmond International Airport is about 15 miles east.
