Housing includes a mix of options, ranging from ranch-style homes with square, tree-shaded front yards to high-density developments. Locals enjoy proximity to upscale communities like Saratoga and Cupertino, without as high a price tag. “The further west and closer to Cupertino you go, the higher the housing prices get,” says Saundra Leonard, a local Realtor with Keller Williams and a Bay Area native. Single-family homes in Castlemont were mostly built in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, ranging from $1.4 million to $2.6 million. Townhomes from the ‘70s, ‘80s and early 2000s range from the upper $600,000s to around $1.3 million. There’s also a few low-rise condo complexes around the neighborhood’s edges, housing one, two and three-bedroom units that range from the lower $500,000s to the lower $900,000s.

You can take a stroll to a nearby grocery store—There’s a Safeway and a Grocery Outlet on Winchester Boulevard—or stop for dinner at casual eateries like the family-run South Winchester BBQ. Marijane Hamann Park provides a neighborhood space with playgrounds for local families and open fields where dog-owners can take their pets. “Overall, I would say it’s a very family-oriented area – lots of parents and their kids are involved in things like community sports,” Leonard says.

Castlemont is zoned for several school districts. Campbell Union School District serves most of the neighborhood for elementary and middle school grade levels. However, the Moreland School District covers a small area on Castlemont’s west side and includes top-rated options, such as George C. Payne Elementary School. Higher grade levels are served by top-rated schools within Campbell Union High School District, including Westmont High School and Prospect High School. West San Jose is also home to lots of well-regarded private schools. The Harker School, which serves all grade levels, is among the most sought-after institutions in the area.
