Twenty years ago in a small house in West Austin, with just five students and a vision to offer girls an intellectually rigorous, humanities-based education in a creative and nurturing environment, the Girls’ School of Austin was born.
Today the school has a state-of-the-art, green campus nestled in the leafy neighborhood of Tarrytown and welcomes an average of 150 kindergarten through eighth graders every year. With the incandescent Firebird as its mascot, the Girls' School of Austin proudly proclaims its mission to educate brilliant, independent young women.
Learning at the Girls' School is project-based and hands-on. Beginning in kindergarten, students choose to learn either piano or a string instrument as well as Spanish. It’s not uncommon to see these curious, confident students disembarking from their school bus around Austin with notebooks in hand; the city’s abundant natural settings often become outdoor science classrooms. Fifth graders travel further afield to the McDonald Observatory to enrich their study of astronomy. Ecology is integrated into daily life at GSA by way of the campus’s 5000-gallon rainwater cistern, bioswale and rooftop garden. Afterschool enrichment programs include orchestra, yoga, robotics, podcasting and more.
Many alumnae go on to Austin’s magnet and private high schools and eventually matriculate at the country’s most prestigious colleges and universities equipped with the tools to become the next generation of trailblazers. From the very first day of school to eighth grade graduation, the Girls’ School of Austin is committed to helping every girl ignite her inner Firebird.

Excellent school that focuses on academics and developing strong 21st century skills like teamwork, communication, empathy, problem solving, and confidence. Fantastic arts and music programs as well as a strong PE and Spanish program. My daughter absolutely loves going to school and the incredible community there.
